I was wondering if I could put a b&m or hurst style shifter into my '65 slant six with a 904, even though its a comlumn shift...

Well sure you could. The shift lever on the transmission doesn't care where it gets directions from. You may have to make up some mounts on the transmission hump to properly locate the shifter, but no doubt the brand you decide on will have some mounting tips and hints.

Finding another column without the shifter might be tougher, but you could always just remove the shifter handle.

But I have to ask...slant six what? You might find a factory style floor shifter from a similar model year that would work for you.
