simple question.

Original 68 charger with console shifter. When you manually put the car in to L or 1st gear. Should it "lock" into 1st? By that I mean the shifter itself. When I move the shifter all the way down it never really "clicks" in 1st . The car does leave in 1st , I can slide up the shifter and and will have an very noticeable click into 2nd, and finally up into D.

Wondering if the linkage is about out of adjustment ??

The rooster comb in the trans should click-in.... nothing in the console shifter really does (in 1st). Shifter detents or ridges are to prevent you from doing something wrong, such as pulling down from second to first....nothing wrong with going from first to second.... this is why the ridges are felt in the shifter only certain ways.

From the service manual.

Button push requires to go down. No button, feel the clicks, to move up.
