So I'm lookin at converters. My car is a 65 Coronet 2 door hardtop. In the process of assembling the 383. Stock stroke, .030 over. 10.4:1 quench motor. 271@ .050 on 108 LSA cam. Edelbrock old style 383 Torker intake and a 950 holley vacuum secondary 3 barrel carburetor. 4.56 gears. I'm thinkin 4500 on the converter. ...and yeah it's gonna be a street car.

I actually like that idea. I had a 4200 built by PTC a few years back for a1970 Dodge Coronet. Bigger transcooler, and the thing ran well, you couldn't even twll it was a high stall, until it fuc... Fudged you up from a light.
Best advice just get a quality one buiilt for your car. Personally, I love the ideas!

A 3 bbl carb? whats that look like? or was that a miss print?

Holley did indeed sell a 3 bbl carb. Two regular primary barrels and a huge oval secondary.

i m good friends with the owner from ptc and he can fix u right up, he fixed mine 3 wks ago and it works very well !! high quality and superb service!!

That is a nasty stall for the street. I know you have allot of gear but you are going to generate allot of heat eveywhere. I think you will have issues wih cooling. I dont know i you gave ever had stall that high but i think it would be miserable to drive. I ran 4.10 with 3500 hundred and to me it was borderline streetable driving. Just my two nd half cents.

No misprint. Here's the carb. They came dealer installed on cars like Baldwin Motion, Nickey, Mr Norm and the like.

I ain't skeered. I been doin this a long time. With the modern converter technology, I can get 4500 flash stall and be pretty tight for street. Besides, I won't be driving it everyday. Well....I probably will some weeks. lol I've had cars set up like that before and I loved driving them on the street. I think it's a blast.

4500 stall?....i dunno rat, that might be a bit high. i got a 3500 in my 440 and its crazy. i wish i had a 2800 instead. just my thoughts....thats all ! good luck.:icon_batman:

Rusty,
I have the COAN CONVERTER 3000-3200 STALL, and wish it was more!
I would love to come across someone that owns and hates the way the 4000-4500 rpm converter feels, and trade them!

You folks are looking at stall Speed, mixed up with loose or tight converters. A well built quality converter will run on the street as high as 5500, just make sure it is kept cool and well hydrated with tranny fluid.

I have a question for you Rat. Why the three barrel? Is it the novelty of it or...?

Mike

I've just always wanted to try one. I have a very nice 3310 750, but honestly, I think with the gear, good quench, ported heads converter and cam it won't hurt to go a little more. Plus, the vacuum secondary should work well with the automatic. I've done a lot of reading about the three barrels and found nothing but they were badass. I gotta try one.

Coan makes good stuff.

The 108 LSA cam will most likely want the high stall so me thinks you are on the right track. I had a 4 spd behind my 383 and it was a hoot! Pretty much spent my youth getting sideways in first and second and watching my buddies reaching for whatever they can grab onto. The 3 BBL might be a bit much but you won't know until you try. I ran a 700 DP. I have an NOS 1030 3 BBL but have nothing to try it out on - yet. The 472 hemi might like it.

I plan on deckin it out with a quick fuel adjustable secondary diaphragm. That should help.
