I have a 73 Satellite with a 318 2bbl (until I put my LD340 manifold and carb on it, I need it to run).

Symptoms, it stumbles of the line. I am assuming it is the accelerator pump is bad, also when it is cold it will only start with starting fluid, I can crank and pump the pedal and nothing, spray a bit of starting fluid in the breather opening and she fires right up.

I was told by the guy I bought it from that this may not be the original carb for the car. I have looked on Auto parts web sites and it looks like 73 is a one year only carb, is that correct ? would a 74 and up work ? is it different due to the unleaded started in 74 ? , I see for Carter numbers online that the carb kit works on 6316 ,6317, 6343, 6344.

so can anyone tell me what should be on it ? or does it mater as long as the carb kit fits ?

thanx

Well,
Lets dissect this:
It very well may be a 1 year only carb but that is not to say another 2BBL carb will not work on this application.

I can tell you this much: Todays gasoline is manufactured for Fuel Injected applications only.
It does have ethanol in it.
You and are neighbors, me being Antelope Valley and WE both know California gasoline is Oxygenated, meaning it is diluted and therefore Carbureted engines here in CA will suffer in performance.
The gas dissipates or evaporates quicker in a carbureted engine as opposed to a fuel (pressurized) injected system.

That being said, your BEST BET is to approach this "disability" (CA gas) with the healthiest fuel system possible.
I would suggest finding a truly professional Carb Shop to restore/rebuild your Carter 2BBL carb.

You could give Sean Murphy Induction a call in Long Beach (I think)
SMI induction.

It sound to like you have air leak in the manifold or vacuum lines could be leaking air. reason for cold start issues and stumbles off the line. check for leaks first. then have your carb checked out. I just removed my old 1973 318 and installed 390 stroker.

When you say I am assuming it is the accelerator pump is bad then why not actually make sure? It takes a minute to pop off the air cleaner, actuate the throttle and see if there is gas squirting. You may even get lucky and find the linkage just needs adjusting or has been disconnected.

If you already have the replacement 4bbl intake and carb, it would probably be just as fast to swap them over as it would be to rebuild your 2bbl.

Next time spray your starting fluid at the gasket between the carb and intake.

If it fires up...there's your vacuum leak.

Kinda' common.

thanks for the insight, I guess I first need to check for leaks and see if the carb actually pumps any gas.

Yeah, I will look at it, I just bought it and haven't had much face time with it, It stalls when I turn the corner sometimes and you have to feather the pedal or it can stall, it will fire right back up no problem with that.
thanx, just need eliminate obvious things first.

will do that, thanx

...also, I'd consider installing a clear (glass) fuel filter.

I had the same problem you're describing on my D150.

Turned out the fuel line was rusting on the inside.

It would start and run, but if it stalled, it wouldn't start again without fluid or gas poured in the carb.

With the sight glass filter in place, it was obvious there was crap in the fuel.

Thanks for all the suggestions, the car really hasn't been on the open road, since 2010 from what I have been told, as the gas gauge was working just before I bought it, then the guy said it was on and off. Will check the ground or maybe just a bunch of crap in the fuel tank/line
