I wanted to make the engine as stock as possible, so I went and brought an air OEM air cleaner assembly for it. It's black with the pie plate. "440 Super commander". My car was made in LA plant. Now I am being told that I should have the "twin snorkel" air cleaner. Also ,which is correct, "super commander" pie plate, or "440 magnum" pie plate. Anyone know which is correct?

Super Commando is used on Plymouth models and 440 Magnum is used on Dodge models. My '68 Coronet R/T was built at the LA plant. It's an air conditioned, automatic car and has a dual snorkle air cleaner painted gloss black.

This has been discussed on other sites at length and it seems that the conclusion based on original untouched cars that it was hit or miss as to what was put on these cars at the factory new. Although it is generally thought that ALL A/C cars got the twin snorkle "silenced' air cleaner because it went with the "luxury" thoughts for an A/C equipped type car.

I had a run down number matching 69 R/T SE Charger and it had the dual snorkel type. Car had A/C too. Yeah, wish I still had it!

Back in 1972 i sold my brother a one owner 1970 Charger R/T with factory A/C that also had the twin snorkle air cleaner.

Frog...correct from Paul Herd book. Well, it seems like everyone says it had the dual one...I have not seen that one anywhere for sale. Guess I have to try a junk yard? Any other ideas...besides Goggle?

If you GTX is an A/C car then yes, I believe it should have the twin snorkle. The different pie tins are available repro seperately. If it is not an A/C car then the plans from the factory were for it to have the smaller, round, unsilenced air cleaner which is available repro.

If you need the twin, watch Ebay as i am sure you will find one there.

Why are you being told you should have the dual snorkel?

Does the car have A/C?

Being built at the LA plant has nothing to do with it. What matters is where the car was SOLD. If you have the broadcast sheet or window sticker, it would tell you if the car came with the N97 package.

Yes the car has Factory A/C. and the fender tag has the H51 code for A/C.
It also has the 26" Rad. in it. According to my tag decoder, it says N97 was noise reduction package.

Thanks.

RE: N97 - true but you won't find the code on a tag in '69. You will find it on the window sticker or the broadcast sheet.

Here's a picture of the dual snorkle air cleaner on my '68 Coronet R/T made in LA.

I had a 68 coronet R/T that was a one owner till I bought it. Was a factory A/C car, but had the unsilenced breather on it.....best I can recall anyway

I personally think that the factory's INTENT was to supply all A/C equipped cars with the silenced twin snorkle air cleaner but that if the bin was empty when an A/C car got to that point on the line then the other air cleaner was used as it also had no clearence problem with the compressor. Does that make it WRONG for that particular car? Depends on your point of view. If you KNOW that is the way it came from the factory and you like it, then leave it, I don't think it is any kind of serious thing to worry about. In fact if you are going to have your car judged in OEM comp. buy on of each and switch it if a judge is going to ding you for it.

That's what I did. I bought a repro unsilenced air cleaner from Mancini Racing, so that I can show the car either way. Some info I've read says that R/T cars only came with unsilenced air cleaners, however the '68 Coronet sales brochure shows the R/T engine with a dual snorkle air cleaner.

OK, now for the 100,000 question, Where can I get one....a junk yard or somewhere else.
?

Usually on ebay  That's where I found mine, one dent in it but that is history now. Here's a good question that would be helpful: What finish? Hemi valve cover wrinkle black or straight paint?:edgy:
