Crankshaft- It is forged!

Looking at this ad for a 440 crankshaft, the owner is calling it cast but it sure looks forged with the rounded counterweights. Any thoughts?

By looking at that picture I'd agree with you. Rounded corners and wide parting line.

The counterweights have "v" shaped cuts, isn't that a sign of being internally balanced? Meaning forged. Not an expert by any means.

Should be able to give you a part number, eh?

Hey guys,
I am going to look at it tomorrow and will verify by part number, the parting line sure looks like a forged crank to me too. thanks for the feedback.

Hmmm...
from the pic, its looks cast to me...
but it's hard to tell from pic

Smack it with a wrench,it should ring like a bell. BTW it's forged.

I'd bet 2 beers that it's forged and would be the winner! That thing is as forged as they come.....

I am gonna owe a 12 pak before this is over...:icon_eek:

Yep, forged.

If this is going in that 400 block remember about .130" will need to be removed from the counterweights. This is on the radius. I would also put a generous chamfer (about .125") on the main saddle side of the counterweights for added block clearance.

Thanks for the heads-up, Meeps, it is a possibility for the 400.

440 forged crankshaft and block

Picked up the crankshaft and it checks out with #2206160, a forged crank. It also appears to be a 4 speed crank, but perhaps all '68' crankshafts were drilled?

The reason I am saying a '68' crank is because it came from this block.

The heads are #3462346 so proably not original to block and crank.

Now doesn't that have a ring to it, a 68 date correct 440 in my Coronet 440?

Still haven't heard back from the machinist on the 400 block sonic check...but I think there are three options on the table in no specific order:

  • 440 with stock crank, better pistons,,,

  • 400 with stock stroke, KB240 pistons,,,

  • 400 with 440 crank, 400 rods,,,

So...did you pay cast crank price??? ha ha ha

do the last one but with 440 rods / longer rods better rod angle = 451 rpm/torque longer periods of time
some 451 love !!

I believe I did: block, head and forged crank for $170?

At this point in time I do not have 440 rods, am thinking that a 'build it with what I have' will keep my engine project from spiraling out of control. Of course just a day ago I didn't have a 440 crank either. Thanks for the rod angle heads-up.
