I used Dennys driveshaft PDF to measure the driveshaft for the 71 Satellite followed the instructions and dropped off the shaft to be made from an old C body driveshaft. Well the slip yoke bottoms out in the transmission and I had to take the caps off the rear ujoint to get the driveshaft into the yoke. Its just too damn long but it does fit with no way for the suspension to compress without shoving the trans forward. So I guess I need to have it cut again I assume an 1.5 to 2.0 inches will be good.

If it can be installed you don't want to take 2" off... Max 1.5" probably 1.25"

Did you have a slip yoke prior to making the measurement? Any driveshaft shop I've ever dealt with wanted the measurement from center-to-center of the front and the rear U-joints, with the slip yoke 3/4 to 1 inch from bottoming in the trans. That chart looks to me like they're taking the front measurement right off of the tailshaft case, minus your 3/4" to the end of the shaft?

I looked at a hotrod mag article they used the same dimensions I did for a mustang driveshaft.. Theirs worked out.. Im wondering if the guy who made this drivesaft understood. I was thinking 1.5 inches would be good.

I know somewhere I read that you stick the slip yoke in and pull it out an inch.. I guess you guys are correct I'll have them take 1.25 at most off it.

Might as well not guess this time...without the suspension hanging, set the shaft aside, put the yoke in an inch from bottoming and use the number from center-to-center where the front and rear ujoints will be. Make sure your guy knows how you measured it, you'll be good to go!

At the time i took the measurements I didnt have a slip yoke. I used the measurements asked for by that sheet. I assumed they would know what needed to be done from there. Then I got the driveshaft and slip yoke after. Driveshaft guy couldn't find a 727 slip yoke..

Well I'm this close to testing out my 440 in someone elses car. I have a short checklist of stuff needed to be done to get it ready for the first drive.

2 trans bolts that go through mount into trans
Coolant
Oil change and filter
Vacuum line for the brake booster
and some sort of exhaust. He plans on getting new exhaust ran so just something temporary so I can try out my first built engine.
I'll have to record the burnout.. Single tire fire YESSSAAA!!!! soon to follow will be a video of me installing a rearend.. Not sure how that 8.25 is going to hold up. lol

1 to 1 1/4 IMHO more is way too much...

Congrats on getting this far! Awaiting the video!

It normally wouldn't take this long but parts trickle in from the owner and that makes it drag out.. spent 2 weeks trying to get a driveshaft built ended up just getting one to modify. Bought a radiator sent the wrong size.. crap like that. Anyone know the part number for the smaller yoke caps? He bought some but they are wrong and for a bigger yoke.

Edit:
I believe its a 7260 yoke. So I assume that's what we need. The 7290 is the larger yoke and I believe that's what he bought.

That happens when the customer buys his own parts. Had one the other day that brought his car in and wanted the new shocks he had bought installed. There was no find out what's wrong with my car, just install the shocks. We did this he came in paid the bill and left. He came back about a hour later complaining that the car was doing the same thing. We told him he never told us what the car was doing, and we never test drove the car. All we did was put the shocks on. He got very upset, to the point that I told him that we did exactly what he wanted and if the shocks fall off to let us know, otherwise to take his attitude elsewhere.

My job was to install the engine that he bought from me and make it run, well that has trickled into all this other crap. It starts with the key now the interior is up to him.. I don't plan on messing with the interior of this car. I already did more than I wanted to installing and restoring the dash. Now he wants me to rewire the entire car. Good god .. Where does it stop. Maybe I'm too cheap and should give him I don't want to do it prices. I personally hate the 71 to 74 cars.. I may get hated on for that statement but Its America don't like my opinion? Kick Rocks.....

Here is a list of stuff I have done to this car. And he wants it done cheap lol... Believe me 2 broke *** people should never occupy the same space. He tried to get me to take 3k cash for my engine.. I stuck to my number and got it.

  • Installed disc brake conversion.
  • Installed all new rear drums and hardware
  • Installed all new gas tank fuel sender and replaced all rubber hoses.
  • Sourced that goofy evap tank for the car that mounts behind the driver rear tire.
  • Refinished the dash, installed new cluster, installed new "used" dash pad.
  • New shocks all the way around
  • Rebuilt or replaced all steering parts.
  • The list will get greater I am sure.

If you measure C to C on u-joints use the trans yoke your measuring with. Had a shaft made from a driveshaft that I didn't want to remove the yoke had 1330 u-joint. Ordered new shaft using C to C of old shaft but with 1350 u-jointed yoke. Well the new yoke was 1/2" bigger and beefier, it was ok but just barely.
