crimped fuel pump rebuild

my understanding is that nobody can rebuild and restore the crimped together fuel pumps, after asking around a member contacted me and said he found a guy that specializes in this type of pump and passed along the guys contact info ... after a long conversation with this guy i sent him my original carter fuel pump from my GTX. This guy said he only does a few runs each year and has to have a minimum of 20 in a batch to keep the plating cost lower... anyway his name is Fred Ballard, google his name and the info will come up, kinda pricey but i want to keep all my original parts when possible..$250 for service and $25 for return shipping, all paid in advance... that part made me a little leery but we will see, he claims to have done over 1,500 of these crimp together pumps... check him out... Why bother going to that extent? A new crimp style pump by carter, who made the original, is around $20.

...plus you're inviting disaster with a possible leak. The crimping process was designed to afford a good seal, and speed in production. Reversing that would require a special die, and press....possibly crystalizing the metals and causing stress cracks.......we applaud the effort though!

i hear you guys loud and clear.. im doing an original type of resto where numbers and original parts are important and this guy is supposed to have all the correct special die's and press. Who knows guys maybe it will be a disaster or maybe it will be a new path for the numbers guys that help the resto process with the proper original stuff.

If you're doing an original type of resto the fuel pump would be painted along with the rest of the engine anyway.

there has been some debate about weather the fuel pump was factory painted, i believe that they were left natural, at least in my case i believe the pump was not painted, i have a one owner barn find parked in 1977.

Frank Badalson claims the engines were trimmed before painting, including the fuel pump. Exactly the same way I did mine. Looking closely in one of the photos (wish the logo wasn't in the way) you can see the painted pump.

I know @rich hourigan got his pump back and he's happy with it visually. Last I heard he doesn't have his engine back together yet so no input on how well it works. Hopefully, now that you've reopened this thread he'll stop in and update.

hey guys, yes i received my fuel pump back from Fred Ballard, looks real nice with all new plating, it was almost a shame that i painted it. As Geetex mentioned i have not tested it yet. I promise i will get some pics up soon, my daughter will show me again how to post pics, im a computer caveman.

I talked to Fred this morning...he seems to think crimped pumps began in 65. Anyone else have proof?
