Cruising Is Not a Crime

Here in Mexico there is slow traffic along the road that parallels the beach (Malecon). The cars are just the daily drivers we all have. Don't know if it could be called "cruising", but there is no law forbidding it.

Several cities in Minnesota have anti-cruising ordinances. The ones that don’t have been known to use heavy handed enforcement to discourage cruising. St Paul would water down the streets and one year chip sealed a popular cruise route during Back to the 50’s weekend.

Where I lived we had Genesee St. in Waukegan Il. It was the main st. through town of course. It had been the spot since the 60’s. I got my license in 76 and cruised in my folks New Yorker or International crew cab until I bought my truck in June. My best bud had a 72 Chevy half ton we had dropped an LT1 in. It was usually solid cars, two lanes each way, so racing was a little tricky. Every once in awhile you’d hit one of the lights right. To end cruising, they changed it to one lane each way with parallel parking. That was way after my stint. They still have a car show and cruise celebration every year when they close down the street to main traffic. I took the Plymouth a couple times, just for kicks.

In the 70s, State College did the opposite of Waukegan - Changed from one lane each way, to dual lanes one way, became the location of choice for those from surrounding towns. Local government put no cruising policy in place shortly after. In 1987 the town started having an annual cruise and car show weekend, which I attended for years. The last year it was in place, 2018, there was a minsicule turnout of cruisers, and the event was dropped the following year. Sign of the times in my area.
