Hey guys
Just pulled the cover off the original date code correct dana 60 in my car.
It's supposed to have 4.10 gears in it from the factory.
I was surprised to count the ring and pinion but find out they are 4.88's.
Thing that really puzzles me is how the ring gear says dana on it with the same production date as my car.

Could someone have bought 4.88 gears over the counter thru direct connection and they just happen to have the same date stamped on them?
Let me know if you have any ideas.

You verified the BOM numbers on the axle tube? That will tell you what that axle was made with. Far as the 4:88 gears no doubt they were added. Dates jiving is a coincident.

All that verifies is someone made a drag car from the get go

Ya code is 602957-5 10/30/68

Unless they put a ring gear spacer on between the gear and carrier, you'll need a different carrier if you plan on going 4:10.

Huh wish i would have paid better attention when i had the cover off.
YouTube will be up soon of it.
I will have to look when I'm editing it for a spacer.

From my memory bank, up to 4:10[ 3:23, 3:54, 3:73] is one carrier and 4:56 and lower is another. There were companies that made a spacer for the lower gear set to be used on the up to carrier, came with longer bolts too.

Ok thanks. Good to know. Eventually I'm going to restore the car back to stock.

What is the highest rpm you could rev a 426 hemi in 1969 with available aftermarket valve springs at that time?
It would want probably 7 grand? Have to remember they were putting the biggest tire they could back then

Your lower ratio carrier might carry some value as barter material for someone wanting to go opposite if it didn't use the spacer. If it did use the spacer, might have some barter value there for the spacer.

If it does not have the ring gear spacer and had a 5 series carrier installed..dr diff sells 4.10s for the 5 series otherwise 4.56 was the lowest ratio.

Ok cool. Good to know.
