Dana 60 U-joint

The 4 speed may be the issue- I have a 4 speed and some spirited track racing looks to have pounded out my yoke. I developed a vibration and low and behold, gap and play in the yoke. If that yoke is older, and used hard, perhaps it’s pounded out too. Mine was the 7260 though, but those clutch dumps can be violent.

That's what I said to the owner - probably too many clutch dumps. His had a vibration that grew the faster he went - getting pretty bad above 55 mph. He had tires balanced, wheels aligned several times and looked at most everything else. Engine has a roller cam and idles so smooth it's amazing. Hopefully this will take care of his problem too.
 
I have one of these kits somewhere in the shop. I wound up not using it in the end. If I can find it, i will post PN's. The U joint itself may have a PN as well. No promises though. Just an attempt.

Found the kit PN P4120714, U joint PN K4120717. It is a Spicer U joint.
 
All's well that ends well. He got a new differential yoke and u-joint and we installed it this morning. But then we ran into a problem in that the transmission yoke would not slide far enough into the transmission to get the rear u-joint seated. He said they had always had trouble getting the drive shaft out and I had to tap the yoke with a hammer when I removed it last week. After messing around and indexing the driveshaft in several different positions with no luck we finally pulled it out and put it on a bench and I shined a light down inside it and down towards the bottom you could see where there was a slight offset in the splines. Apparently a hard launch of two in what ever car that yoke was previously in, had torqued the splines over slightly and it would only slide on the output shaft to that point and no more. I have a feeling the yoke was actually deadheading on the output shaft, that on the input shaft. that possibly on the crank, etc. When the car would be put on his 2-post lift the weight of the Dana would pry the yoke back down the tail shaft but once it was lowered again I'm sure it was crammed on to those bent splines and locking up.

We managed to scrounge up another used transmission yoke of the same length with the same size u-joint and tried it out and it slid all the way into the tail housing up to the yoke. So after knocking the u-joint out of the old yoke and putting this one on in it's place. Took it for a test drive and it ran dead smooth so problem solved and he can get on to troubleshooting other stuff now.

Forgot to mention - the old rear yoke appeared to show signs of where the u-joint caps had beat/worn depressions into the yoke cap seats - probably due to the transmission yoke splines locking up when the car was on the ground and putting force on the driveshaft.
