Hello all. First time poster. My son and I just acquired our first Mopar, a 72 roadrunner. The car retains its original terribly faded two tone green paint which is not the prettiest combo I've ever seen, to say the least. We are now trying to decide what color/colors we want to go with for the repaint.

We are considering one of the two colors (GF3 or GF7) that it came with but also adding a vinyl top, hood stripes, and wing and front spoiler to go with it. I realize rarity means nothing if noone wants it but does anyone know how many two tone RR's were made in 72 (this is the first I've seen and the paint colors are opposite top to bottom from what the hamtramck registry ordering info page says. I assume the page is backward, not the car) ? Should I consider retaining the original paint scheme even though the original engine is long gone? I lean toward just creating what we want and not worrying about originality, but everything except the engine appears to be numbers matching.

Any input, opinions, or pics of green cars would be much appreciated. A google search doesn't turn up many in these shades. Thanks.

An 2-tone painted top car in 72 is kinda rare. I can't remember when I last saw one. Can you post a pic of the fender tag?

1972 was the year the fewest Road Runners were made. I take it the interior is green? Kinda limits your choice of colors unless you change it. ......but I like green myself.

I would be glad to post a picture of the tag tomorrow but right now I am not around the car. When I decoded it online it did spec the two tone paint. I think a v02 code?

And yes, the interior is green. I don't care for it much but my son's favorite color is green and he likes it.

turn off Barrett/Jackson and do the car the way YOU and your son want ..good lord are we all going to be number matching nut and bolt correct garage trophy owners or the guys who take these car out kick them in the butt as they were made to be used ...I think these greedy auction houses have done more to hurt the hobby than preserve it as they claim.. especially price wise ..I have a 63 Polara thats my version of a Max Wedge..70 Dart with a 440 shoehorned into it and I'm working on a 65 Tempest that just about a 65 GTO ...(wow ..I feel better now)..good luck and build the car you want and enjoy your hours of labor with your son it doesn't get any better ..just my 2 cents ..ok maybe 5 cents

Thanks for the input. I lean toward building what we want too. But I've never seen another two tone and wondered what I was dealing with. Still would love to see some rr's in these shades of green.

Who said anything about Barrett Jackson? I think you need to lighten up. He asked questions. They got answered. Pretty simple.

Ya chill dude. He might have one of a handfull of 72 RR's with this type of paint sceme. I've owned over 60 71/4B's since the 70's and can't recall ever seeing a paint top 72RR. Might be good to know what he has before he paints it red and throws on some air shocks and side pipes.:icon_fU:

It's okay guys. I didn't take it in a bad way. I asked for input and by doing that will take all that's given. That said, you are right, I hate to completely change a car if it is a rare paint combo. I can't imagine too many people ordered a car this way. And I've never seen another. And I knew you all would know more about it than I do. I can talk mustangs with anybody but am still learning with mopars.

I had a 69 GTX that was silver with black painted top and lowers. A friend had a 70 Cuda blue with a white painted top. I've seen a few others over the years, all were 69 and 70.
VO2 is 2-tone paint but on a 72 Plymouth B that usually means body side molding with silver lowers.

PS. I love the 67 Mustang GT. There are 2 here in my town. Both are 427 4-spd cars.

Cool! I actually own a 67 GTA with the s code 390, but its a coupe. My parents helped me buy it in 1983. And I still have it. Just finished a resto on it last year. Now I am planning on helping my 16 year old son make this car his to keep forever. He had to have a Mopar. Lol.

Does the car actually have an engine in it right now? It's sitting mighty high in front, looks unsprung.

Welcome to FBBO, too!

No unfortunately it's not a 4 speed. It is a slapstick 727. I'm not sure he could drive a 4 speed anyway. Nobody's cars or trucks are like that now. Yeah he would learn but a 4 speed was just in the way when I was hauling my honey. Lol. We spent 2 years looking for a car that needed little to metal replacement. This car is extremely solid.

No the car came with a completely apart 383 not in the car in the pics. The 400 is long gone.

I would go back original on the car because like others have said not many 72 Roadrunners made and I'm betting very few made with a two tone paint.

If you are already asking you pretty much have your answer, you know it is rare and might be even more rarer. I would talk with Galen Govier about it and see just how many had this option.

The cars that sell the best are the ones left original and if you start adding your own touches it will hurt in resell (Most of of the time) if you or your son ever wants to.

I like the color combo and it really does look good with fresh paint and it will be one at car shows and even MOPAR shows that wont get lost in all the high impact color cars, it will be a stand out car.

The car looks like a really good start to a great project and congrats and welcome to the site. The best part of all this is to enjoy the time with your son and have fun working on the car and driving it.

I've been collection data on 71 and 72 Plymouth B bodies for a long time. I have (2) 71 road runners and (1) 71 GTX coded VO2, but this is the first 72 I've come across. I'd love to see the fender tag. The body paint color will be coded on the 2nd line up from the bottom and the top paint is coded on the third line up. In my opinion, it's rare enough that I'd restore it back to original.

I found the only pic on my phone that I have of the fender tag. Not easy to read all of it but the codes in question seem pretty clear. I will take another pic of the tag tomorrow if need be.

I really appreciate all the help.

I say keep the body color and add some black - black vinyl, black stripes or flat black out paint. Someone can repaint the roof green later, your kid isn't going to get much with a car with a pea green roof. Might also want to consider sassy grass. That car needs rallyes.
