Can someone help me with decoding the year for this 440 block. The numbers on this block look to give different years. Has anyone seen something like this before?

the top pad shows - H440 (which is 1972?)

the date code stamped on side of the block - 7-30-69 (late 1969 or early 70’ block?)

Casting #’s - 2536430-8

Serial # stamped on oil pan rail - 2D105955

Numbers on the bottom left corner of pad - 8 and 4, not sure what those mean.

My guess is the block is a late 69 or early 70, but somewhere along the lines the pad was stamped with a H440...?

Here’s some pics of the numbers. And thanks in advance for the help.

Engine build date was 8/4/71
Block cast date 7/30/69
H 440 installed in a 72 automobile
The 2D10595 is the serial numbers 2 being the year 72, D the plant ? and the 10595 serial #

Thank you Jerry!

So being that the block was casted in 1969, Would that technically make it a 69’ block?

or would it technically be a 1972 block? being it was later built and installed in a 72’ automobile. Even though it was casted years earlier.

I’m thinking about selling the block. So I want to make sure I advertise it correctly.

For what ever reason that particular block didn't get assembled into a complete engine unit 8/4/71. That date would have been for a 72 automobile.
Actually the cast date would be a 70 block because 70 production was starting then.

Plant D is Belvidere ,Illinois
Thanks, I don't try to look all this stuff up anymore, just going on my old a$$ memory. Hope I didn't miss to much in my assessment of what the OP wanted. Thanks again.

nope you pretty much nailed it:thumbsup:

Probably want to carefully check all the machined dimensions, main crankshaft bores, lifter bores cylinder bores. Block sat for a while. Maybe sent back for re-machining & not back to the line for a while? Bet some folks on the site could explain.

A friend built a 440 for me and used a block with a casting number of 2536430-5, casting date of 10, 31, 69.
No numbers on the top of the deck but oil pan rail is stamped 2C101487. Guessing it was built in 1972 but not sure which plant was "C". Any thing else you guys can determine with this limited information? TIA.
Few changes to the Wagon in the last couple of years.

Thanks guys!
If memory serves, belvidere plant only assembled big cars, c-body and bigger. And the Vin on the pad just above the pan rail indicates a very early 72 build, which matches the August assy date. (New year vins started 1xxxxxx.)
