I know someone has the right decoding information. I Do Not! Any help would be much appreciated. We are just starting on this car and we want to do her justice. Thanks.

A1 (321) Basic-Radio group- radio music master,heater hot water w/ defroster,Backup lights,outside mirror-left ,inside glareproof mirror,wheel covers

L1- bumper guards (front)

1220 - 20th December 1961 (shipping order date)

0561 - sequence order number

839 - no such code - (code 535 - Dodge 440 convertible )

815- all red vinyl ( interior)

Never seen a black on black convertible ! That's if the paint code is BB6 (there is no paint code 686)

What is your vin number?

Could this be a Police car convertible ?? ...for the chief lol

OK VIN is 5326166536 Fender Tag is 1220 0561 535 815 BB6. For sure. I am trying to figure out of this cme as big block car (361) or the 318.

Hey easy up ...mines polar white with white top....beautiful.

I'd say 318 otherwise it would have been on the tag.

Best if you get the build card from Chrysler historical..it will have all the options and details on this car
I am sure yours is beautiful but THIS car looks like it was painted with a sponge. Hahaha. Where would it show the code for a big block?

Under N on the tag should be a 4

Your car was the 66,536th car scheduled for production at the
Newark, DE assembly plant in 1961

Where are you guys/girls getting this info? I would like to look up my brothers car- C-2 G-5
1115 0011542 851 DD1U (VIN 5422123482). Help me understand. Kind of a bummer Dad's didn't come as a big block. It is really cool to know the history though.

And the engine? 62 Polara standard with 361 so how do I know that?, I'm starting to get the hang of it but tons of info still out of my grasp. I am having fun though thank you all.

I have the dealers retail price list reference book.
The 361 was an option($102.70) for darts ,standard for polara 500

decoding the fender tag for the '62 has always come up empty on here....decoding a build sheet on the other hand is not a problem. The Ramcharger book by Darrell Davis has these codes for the Lancer and the Dart/Polara cars. I also would love to see my tag decoded but so far all the links to decoders for the 62 have not PROVEN successful for the 62. The later year decoders seem to be reliable.
My '62 Polara has some 6 codes in the A-Z line.

your build sheet will have code 504 to indicate 361/4bbl

Not if it's a Polara 500. The 361 was standard so any references to which engine will be blank unless someone special ordered it with a different engine. You're correct for a Dart.

Different plants used different codes. Depending on which plant it was assembled will determine what codes you go by.

One way to decipher codes on these '62s is to read other threads on fender tag decoding for this year, and compare their findings to what you have. Remember to make sure the car in question is from the same plant as yours.

Another way is to get yourself a Chrysler Corporation Production Option Code Book for 1962-1965. They're not complete but there is some good info in them and codes.

Also member 1962polara has some good numbers. He helped me out quite a bit.

Yet another way is to send the required information into the Chrysler Historical Society for a complete Production Card description. They do a great job but it's not free. I believe it was $55 when I sent for mine. (See link below)

Now if you can find your broadcast card in the car you'll be in luck. Look over or on the back of the glove box. Sometimes they're taped on there. Under any one of the seats, you could find one.

That's the fun part about owning one of these cars. It's the "hunt" not the chase!
