deep frying a turkey........ any tips?

Years ago when I first started frying turkeys peanut oil came in 4 gal containers. Then after it became real popular they changed it to 3 gal containers. You have to get a single gallon bottle to have enough to do the job, and it is really expensive by the gallon.

I remember oil was in a 5 gallon container years ago.....and also remember paying 49 cents a pound for brisket and you could get turkeys for.....heck, fer cheap!

I need almost 4 gallons of oil to cover the turkey........... they sell 3 gallon buckets, does the oil "grow" when its hot? or does the "rolling" boiling oil cover the turkey anyway? can I add a little vegetable oil to make the difference if necessary?
Pennzoil 0w-20 if you like a European flair, Quaker State plain 30W if you like PA crustiness, just don't use any STP, it gives it a rather Southern bouquet but you'll pay for it the next day.

Really though almost all grocery stores here sell peanut oil by the half gallon.
Good luck, and yes it should be covered in oil, maybe an inch out of the oil is ok.

Kill it first, or it will make a big mess.
Not making that mistake again

Did you put the turkey in the pot and add water to determine the amount of oil you will need? I wouldn’t fill the pot more than 3/4 full with the turkey covered otherwise you risk overflow and fire. The oil will bubble up an inch or so. How big is your Turkey? A 32 quart pot is good for a Turkey up to 14 pounds. Anything over that and you need a bigger pot. If I remember correctly the last time I did one I used around 4 gallons of oil. Back then they sold it in 35 pound boxes which was a little over 4 gallons.

Happy Thanksgiving......sometimes I'm a dick:lol:

Just under 50 bucks for 3 gallons here....
Yep like everything it varies... $30 was the highest I saw in the past few months and it was a gallon not 3 as it gets much cheaper the more you buy...

30 bucks? I'll just put that in the gas tank and head your way........... Rebel loves a road trip!
Let me know I can get those hoods out then!!! Just kidding I will be making a trip to you soon as I am starting to slow down so I can pick and choose what days I work...

Have not read this whole thread, but is there an air fryer big enough for a turkey? That could work. Air is still fairly cheap.

someone was bitching about going to their in-laws for Thanksgiving; and then this made me think of my brother's ex wife...... no, I never actually saw it; I just had a picture in my head
