What is the best thing to use for a piston stop when the heads are already on the motor? I plan to degree in the cam soon, and I need to make a positive piston stop. RPM heads

Gary,
You can buy a piston stop that crews in the spark plug hole.

Made my own piston stop in this thread. I'm just trying to think how it would work for degreeing a cam. Wouldn't you need the piston at true ttd.

Is the motor still in the or out,if it's out find true tic n use one of your flex plate bolts n tighten it against the block at the rear of the crank

That's a great tool! I'm going to make one. The RPM heads already have the long reach plug, so I will prob need to use a longer bolt. You have to find # 1 TDC and mount your degree wheel so the pointer points to zero on the degree wheel. Then use a dial indicator to check the lift at the lifter. So if your intake center line is say 110, then you want the lifter to be at the same height at 30 degrees before 110, as it is 30 degrees after 110. You can use any # of degrees, but they need to both be the same. So the dial indicator would read say .300" lift at 80 degrees, (30 before ICL) and .300" at 140 degrees. (30 after ICL) So the centerline of # 1 intake lobe would be at 110 degrees. This is how I understand it.

And it makes it easier to bar the engine over with all the plugs out. I like to install the cam when #1 piston is installed and then degree it in but you have to do what you have to do once the engine is together and want to make a change.

The stop is used to locate true TDC. I prefer to degree before the heads go on and use a dial indicator but that's just me. A stop is needed if the heads are on - just be careful when the piston is coming up to the stop.
