Detective work on a 440 RB.

What BS Says above
What are the numbers on the rods?
The thick ones may be 6 pack rods- check the dampner for weight and the converter if you have it
The heavy rods are no better than the LY rods and weigh a ton more incidentally I see Direct connection bolts on the internet- does MOPAR still sell them ? bolts fail a lot more often that rods
lighter rods and lighter pistons make a big difference

I see, lighter is better. The 73 rods will fit the 74 stock pistons? And are the same length?

will fit, same length, balance is very different, check the balancer

it looks the same, but I will inspect it more closely tomorrow. The pistons are flat top but have two tiny half moon cut outs along the edge..

The narrower rods are .10 under. The crank in the 74 is stock. So when I get the block done I will send the crank too. The balancers are the same size but the 74 is lighter weight with a smaller pulley. And it has a chip off on the edge.

If the pic's are of the front of balancers the view to see the difference is from the back I believe.

back side. Never mind about the pulley's the smaller one is the fan pulley. lol.

Here's the rod numbers...2951908 on the big rods and MS3048 or 43. The LY's are 1851535 LY.

the 2951908's are sixpack rods...the LY's are standard 440 rods.

So, I will take the pistons off the LY rods and get new bearings for .10 under for them, and stick a set of new flat tops with valve reliefs on them.

So the top one in my pics is more like the six pack balancer. That came off of the modified 73 passenger car 440 with the LY rods.

report if pistons are standard or oversize, part number from underneath, compression height
thanks for the pics
the six pack ballancer should have come from the motor with the heavy six pack rods
if you look on the lower e=bay picture posted above by Fran you can see at the bottom the inner ring is not round- their is weight missing- that one should go with the 6 pack rods and crank
you get the .010 bearings to go with the .010 crank= the rods have nothing to do with it

I was hesitating to chime in with -.010 rods; I thought my brain was GONE; thanks wmryrider. Whew, I thought my life was over with there for a moment!
