At 71 years of age and dealing with the pain that he was having to deal with, I don't call him selfish one bit. He helped many on and off the track and was very friendly. Maybe you knew him better than I did but I don't know very many people that can deal with the amount of pain and what all he's had to overcome during his life including losing his grand daughter. As for the 911 call...he probably didn't want any members of his family to find him laying out by himself....especially a young member of the family.Took his own life. Selfish. Abuse of 911 service, meant to save lives.
I know he was a heavy smoker and I'm sure that didn't do him well and know he was suffering from severe physical pain from cancer or whatever reason. With all the years he more or less abused himself racing, I can only imagine that he must have been pretty worn out. It's amazes me how Richard Petty still can walk around after some of his crashes! I've only had a few nasty go cart crashes and I'm paying for that now and figure that when I'm 71 (9 more years), I'm going to be feeling like crap.....if I make it that far.It wasnt just the pain from the grand daughters death.Talked last night with guys that knew him,he had some health issues from many years of the cigs. They said cancer would of ended it for him sooner than later.
