here is the factory instructions, note the exceptions

So not to derail here...my '70 XP 500 came to me with a blacked out tail panel.

I know this was the style for the '69, but it's "wrong" for my '70, correct?

I'm going to live with it - the paint would never get matched anyway. It was painted at some point, I'm guessing early 80s since it's single stage, and the color is way too blue compared to the factory F4. The PO, who bought it from the original owners estate and had the car for all of 6 months, had already painted a set of MP valve covers orange, painted the air cleaner orange, and installed a dixie air horn (all removed the first week I had the car)...so they may have painted it black as well. I'm just glad they didn't rattle-can a big "01" on the doors, too!! I'm the 3rd owner, but I kinda don't count that second guy since he didn't have it very long. Just making sure I know the right details is all.

Yes, incorrect for 70. You could probably wet sand the black off back down to the original green without having to repaint it to match. My guess is someone just spray bombed it with some cheap paint anyway. It will probably come right off.

I might try. Only concern is they painted it black when they painted the green...and I'll find (non-matching) F4 underneath.

It doesn't look bad on the '70, it just isn't what the factory did. Not everyone cares about factory correctness.

I'm not concerned about it, just making sure I knew the correct facts was all.

I have zero plans to "restore" this car. It's too honest, too real, and too solid. They're only original once!

Once you take the trim piece off, start by spraying an area with Easy Off oven cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes & then scrape it off with a plastic bondo applicator. That should take the majority of the black paint off, then finish up with some Mirror Glaze fine cut cleaner.

We used this technique to take painted lettering off our trucks when we would sell them.

Base model 69 and 70's Chargers did not get the rear tail panel black out treatment or a aluminum tail panel trim piece on 70's.
I never seen a 69 Charger that the tail panel wasn't painted black from the factory. 70 Chargers were all painted body color. XP and XS 70 Chargers had the finish panel. XH 70 Chargers didn't have the finish panel trim. They had the chrome taillight bezels, and Charger script with the arrow like the 69 Chargers had,but did not have the tail panel moldings that the 69 Chargers had.

Any suggestions for pulling the peel-n-stick black rubstrip down the side of the car? I tried heat at one end, and the (Earl Scheib) green paint started to come with it...so I left it there
