The camshaft gear on my 383 has three 0's one in the middle and two on either side. The crank gear has two zero's one smaller one bigger and a triangle. I brought number one piston up to top dead center and one of the bigger zero's was at 12 o'clock. I aligned it up with the middle zero on the cam gear. Does that sound right or did i make a mistake-------------Thanks

most timing sets are aligned with the cam & crank gears with #6 at TDC, not #1...so if you rotated the engine with #1 cyl at TDC, the cam gear mark will be at 12-oclock

A383 is spot on. I think of it as aligning the timing marks on #1 overlap TDC rather than compression TDC. The multi keyed sprockets usually have a triangle, square and a O at each keyway. Align the O and you will be at the OEM installation. The others are -4 deg and +4 deg.
