Did the 318 engine have both 904 and 727 transmissions behind it in 1969?

Just wondering which trans I have. I am thinking it is the 904 in the 440 model with 4 doors and the 318 engine. Where can I look on the trans to verify what I have???

Look at the pan rail on the passenger side... the 727 has a 'hump' for lack of a better word where the 904 was more of a rectangular pan( I'd be surprised if yours didn't have the 904)

I had a 1969 satellite with a 318 and trailer towing package with 11” brakes, sway bar and 3.23 sure grip. Still had the 904.

You have a 904. A 727 will not mate to a 318 from what I understand. The 904 pan is shaped like the bottom one in the picture. On driver side of the transmission, down by the linkage. It will have A-904 in huge letters. You can’t miss it and confuse one for the other if you’re looking at the tranny from down under. The 904 was considered a light duty tranny. That’s why all the 318 automatic models received 904 transmissions. Smaller engine, lighter duty tranny.

I don't know about the cars, but Power Wagons got the 727 with the small block.

Pickups also could come with 727's behind the teen and so did some of the bigger cars. Just depended on the option package it had.

I went to visit my Coronet this last weekend. It is sitting in a storage unit until May 4th when it will be trailered to the body/paint shop. I checked the fender tag while I was there and it says D31. Between that and the shape of the pan, we have identified this as the 904 transmission which is correct for this car. I have learned a lot from you all on this thread (and others as well). Just wanted to say thanks again!!!

Both small block 904 and 727 trans will fit a 318...watch your driveshaft lengths, they are different. Big block 727 only work with big blocks, but both versions of 727 can use the same driveshaft.

I had a 340 Duster that had a 727-A trans in it.
