Does anyone know the precise difference between the automatic transmission (4966S) and the manual transmission (4967S) Carter AVS carburetors for the 440 in 1971? Can a 4966 be modified to a 4967?

Thanks for your insight.

The automatic carb has provisions on the linkage for transmission kickdown and the manual one does not. You would have to dig deep to see any jet or metering rod differences in the two.

That's a good start and makes sense. Anyone know of any other differences?

Service manual has specs. Manuals are generally set with higher idle and fast idle. Yes this are set up before they go on the car to save time. Also richer idle circuit. And the shorter throttle pin for manual trans.

These are ready to bolt on the intended engine, so any dash pot or idle solenoid, etc will be in place.

The 4966 is a smaller carb, that was used on LP 440s. It has 1 7/16" primary throttle bores vs 1 11/16" for the 4967.
Along those lines, in the Galen book, the 4966 Auto carb is listed as Low Performance where the 4967 Manual carb is listed as High Performance.

This

630 cfm versus 750 cfm

Better off finding a 4968S that was used on 1971 440 HP Auto Cars - 750 cfm

4967S is a difficult and expensive carb to find
