What are the differences between the 440 K-frame (the one with the "coin" welded on it) vs other big block K-frames?

thanks in advance.

A 440 is an RB.

if you have V-8 k-member you can put what ever engine you want on it, small block or big block v-8. 6 cylinder k-members were different. Some hemi and 6 pack cars had reinforced k-members.

the one with a ‘coin’ (which I think maybe you mean washer) welded in it was a v-8 k-member for small block cars like darts and dusters etc…. The washer was just to signify to line workers what car they were working o.

My 70 charger r/t had a slug / disc welded to the k frame as well. And a 70 k member has the anti sway bar that goes through the k frame. And 68 and 69 k frames has the anti sway bar in front of the k frame. AFIK. I hope this additional info helps?

70 K frames got a skid plate if they had a 6 pack engine because they a larger oil pan that would hang down lower to help protect it I believe
Coin seems to mean it was a 70 K frame
There was 3 differnt engine style K frames slant 6 V8 or hemi

All 66-69 V8 K frames are the same, the /6 and Hemi K frames are the only exceptions. The 70-72 V8 K frames, had a different sway bar arrangement, therefore were different. I cannot speak to the 73-74 K frames as the front suspension made a lot of changes.

Interesting, I guess the factory did the coin/washer thing on b body stuff too. Didn’t know that. Learn something new today

The 70 440 6 pak car I restored had the coin tacked on and a skid plate, but the actual K frame was the same as any other V8 for that year, with the exception of a Hemi.

Except for the 66 idler arm mount.

Any wedge v8 will bolt to any other V8 k frame 1966-1972 B & E body. Hemi excluded

67 and older had the different idler arm without the through bolt.

mid year 1970 all had coins welded on with a 2 digit number stamped on them for ID. A B E bodies

1970 B & E started the skid plates on 440+4HP 440+6 and hemi

I have a 1966 Coronet Deluxe with a K-frame swap. Trying to identify what year K-frame I have and what steering linkage, including idler arm, I need
So mine is 1968 or later because of idler arm mount, but what year(s)? 1968-early1970?
I don't understand what the coins are. Thanks for any help.

Not familiar with the 'early 70' K's having the front mounted sway bar....but be careful not to put nicks in the torsion bars using a chain to support stuff. If you do get a nick, smooth it with a file so no nicks will raise as a stress area and cause cracking.

Torsion bars: right side is .0965" diameter, left side is .910". Mismatched. I have 1.03" set on order from PST
Sway bar on my 1966 Coronet is add-on by previous owner
Planning 440 swap, but trying to get steering right.

I have a 70 E body K in my 66 Belvedere....it's been lightened and solid welded after the pinch weld 'flanges' were removed. Can't remember what it weighed before I started but it's 32 lbs now bare.

1967-1969 B body are the same
1970 B body is one year only
1970 - 1974 E and 1971-1972 B are the same
You can use all of them in any of the above years and they will work
there are differences in them the steering mount bracket is different from up to 1970 B and the E bodies and 1971- 72 B

Hi Erickson,
I think mine is 1968-1969. Still learning from all the great prior posts on FBBO.
All the 1967 B-body K-frames that I've seen have the 1966 single lower flange idler arm mount, so I agree with @R413.

1968-early1970?
'68 or "early" '69 (no '70-style bushing bracket bolt holes punched in the top shell half, so not "late" '69; and not '70).
But the most notable thing about your sway is that it is installed upside-down - the "hump" goes up, not down (should be above the k-to-radiator brace). That's why only one bolt of your k-frame bushing mount brackets "hit" for each one. The way it faces probably doesn't matter much...but a bolt to nothing sure seems that it would?

There's a date code stamped into the front vertical face of the K-member if you really want to know; right around the middle and takes some wire brush work to see usually. Look for a bit of a depression where the metal caved in slightly from the stamp-strike.

The 'coin' is just a small oval sheet metal plate - maybe 16ga or so - that's tack welded to the front of the K-frame and is stamped with the last two digits of its part number to identify it for the assembly line. Most K-frames I've personally seen do not have a coin.

The coin is supposed to signify to the K frame welders that it will be used in a high horsepower application, and they were supposedl to fully weld all gussets, brackets, and unions. That very seldom if ever happened. Maximum reinforcement.
