Hi,

I'm looking for any help or advise for a disc brake conversion on my 71 satellite. It has power drum brakes on all four corners, as for now I'm only looking to swap the front. I've been referred to this link for guidance: http://www.moparaction.com/tech/archive/disc-main.html. After reading I still had a couple questions:

1) Will spindles from a 73-74' E- Body/ 73-76' A- Body work on my 71 B-Body?
2) I already have a brake booster, do I need a new one from a disc power car? Master cylinder?

Any help on this would be really great! Thanks!

It will work for B-Bodies from 62' to 72'. Still not sure on whether or not I need a new master cylinder/ brake booster from a disc powered car or not.

You will definitely need a disc-brake master cylinder to complete the job right. You'll also need to replace the metering valve in the drum brake setup with a proportioning valve.

I don't know whether the power booster is different between the full drum and disc/drum setups, but I wouldn't think so. Also, be aware that many of these cars run disc/drum without a booster just fine -- and the boosters have been a source of clearance issues from what I've heard.

as long as the pushrod depth and bolt pattern match on the old(4 drum)master to the new(disc drum)master it should work fine with your booster.just install an adjustable prop valve just after the diverter block,in the rear single feed brake line, and you will solve the prop valve problem.dont know on the spindles?

The master needs to be gor disc/drum setup. A master for all drums will not work on a disc/drum car set up. The booster will work. I bought a kit for my car, same as yours but a RR. I was told to order brake lines for a drum/drum setup. The kit is complete with 11.75" disc

Thanks guys

I'll take your guys' advice, and get a new master cylinder then and a proportioning valve. And I'll check on the push rod depth. O'Reillys has front disc/rear drum master cylinders for about $50. Proportioning valves are in that same ball park on Summit.

Have any of you been able to buy new spindles from an auto parts store? I look online and they don't seem to carry them. I don't mind going to the junkard, but right now there is either 3 feet of snow or its -30F preventing me to getting out there.

Wow I didn't think the 71 and newer still came with drums, my 72 satellite had disc guess it was still an option. Learn something new everyday.

Disc were an option through 72 and became standard equipment in 73
There is a different Midland Ross booster for disc verses drum. The drum booster will work but will lack the real hard stopping power that the disc booster will have.

I've been looking at disc brake conversions kits as well. Most seem to be in that $400-$850 range on Summit, but almost all of them have the 11" rotors. Where did you find your kit at?

The power drums are okay.. but I don't have much confidence in them. The rears have locked up once before, hopefully a new proportioning valve with disc up front will solve that. For now I just wanna swap the front, but would swapping the rear be worth it?

my 71 runner came with manual discs on the front according to the fender tag but someone put drums on it so I need a complete setup to put it back stock don't know why someone would convert it to drums,,it takes all kinds to make the world go round I guess???

I'd go with the 11.75" cordoba rotors with a gen 1 viper kit. cheap brake upgrade. For the rear go with dr. diffs kit

When I got my 71 it had power drums all around. I put a Wilwood kit on it that uses the drum spindles. Kit 140-11020-D. It works very well.

one question, but without highjack intention... as I could read, convert from stock 74 B body 10.75 rotors with KH caliper to lates 11.75 rotors will require just the caliper mount Change ( aside of of course the rotor )? Same caliper, pads and everything of the rest?

if so, how or why a bigger rotor will keep same size pads ( and even caliper ) being a bigger surface to brake due the bigger ratio ?
