I'm going to price out putting together my own electronic ignition conversion. I want a new distributor, what model year should I shop for - anything 73-78? It's for a 383.

I bought a new Rock Auto (Chinese built-decent) 1972 model for my 1965 Coronet 318, an adapter from:http://www.designed2drive.com/, a Standard HEI module-R.A., and a e-coil (later model Ford) for a cheap system. Gapped plugs at .045". You could do the same for a big block.
I did disassemble the R.A. distributor to inspect and lube and had to drill mounting holes in housing. Factory units already have holes but it was easy.

I would run the gm style hei setup not that antique mopar garbage with the ballast resistor. You will not be sorry. Plus you can do it really cheap

I guess I thought a might be able to piece together a better quality kit, but maybe that's not worth the effort.

What is a GM HEI unit comprised of?
