Here's a question for the Pa.members here or anybody for that matter. I will be Registering the Charger from Regular Plates to Antique Plates. I was told by the Notary & Messenger Service person that "The DMV will want my old Original Certificate Of Title- MV-4 and shred it and issue me a new Title." I have copies of my original showing my information and 'Date of Title 11-18-69, Date of Issue to me 5-4-77' and it's just a cool piece of paper to go with the car. Any body have any bright ideas on this subject? What did you do? Antique Registered needs no Yearly Pa. State Inspection. Do I just keep copies and let my Original go?
Thank You in advance.

Why are you getting antique plates?? Why not get classic car plates. Check the dmv site for more info.

I have no advice, but would do anything required to prevent loss of original documents. Good luck.

Cheapest way would to be to make a color copy of the original. Don't know how well it will hold up over time though. 2nd option (more expensive) would be to file for a lost title first (happens all the time). Once you have the duplicate, turn that in to get your antique plates.

That doesnt make any sense to me. If the title is in your name why do you need a new one. I took my car off the road when i yanked the motor. I knew it would be down a while, no sense in paying for tags and insurance on a car i cant drive. When i go to tag it again i will just go get tags. Title work is extra. How can they honestly charge you to title a car in your name thats already in your name

Checked with a friend. He said the dmv will take a good copy of the original. You can keep the original & send them a copy thru a messenger service to get classic or antique plates.

Wow--That seems so practical and easy it's hard to believe a DMV would allow it.

PA DMV is a PITA. There is no reason for them to destroy your title just to get classic tags.

Classic Plates require Yearly State Inspection. More money to State.
Antique Plates require NO State Inspection. No more money to state.
I went back to DMV web site and had found more information I'd missed. Thanks.

So the only difference between Classic and Antique tags in PA is that Classic tags need PA state inspection every year and Antique do not. Otherwise, both are for "limited use" for shows, club functions and pleasure use, meaning no more than once per week. The problem is that PA Antique plates suck. They have a picture of an old model A Ford type car - not what I want on my Road Runner. However, you can use an old pate that is from the year your car was built. So I got antique plates using an older PA plate and now I don't have to deal with inspections - I'll do that myself...

Yes, I had to turn in my title, but for me it didn't matter - so I can't answer is a copy is acceptable. Either way, I would go with Antique and and old plate over a Classic tag.

Just my $0.02

Here is a shot of my old and new plates:

Good to know.

We have YOM in California. Year of manufacture. image.jpgThis car was purchased in Pa. Eight easy trips to DMV, and a $25 fake sticker from ebay. No inspection here as you can tell by the new Benzes with bald tires.

Good to know.
In PA also, With an Additional Fee of $75.00 for Vintage Tag,
after you pay $75.00 for the Classic, Antique or Collectible plate and that the car has been properly titled in the owners name previously.

This $50.00 Fee is for a New Title that will show the car is Registered as CLASSIC or ANTIQUE and NOT REGULAR.
Keep in mind I am going from Registered as REGULAR to Registered ANTIQUE, that is why PA.DMV wants the old Title.

The Messenger Service is the ones that said I need the old Title.
That gets to be the problem, that person at that window does it differently then the person sitting six feet away.
And the person sitting in Reading, Pa. does it differently then the person in Erie, Pa. Just keep throwing them $$$ till your get what you want.:angry1:
I'll take a copy to the bargaining table first.

I have an antique title and never had to turn in my title ......and have the old antique purple and white plate they used to use ......I don't know where your getting all this info from but all I had to do was back 5 years ago was take a good picture of each side and the AAA office I used sent the pictures and a COPY of my title to the DMV that was it

Take a good picture of each side of what, the car? Five years ago was a long time ago, things change from year to year now, and next month it may still be a different process. I'm getting all current information from the PA. Department of Motor Vehicles. No pictures needed as of now for Antique or Classic. The Purple Plates were neat looking.

I got that. But a registration paper and a title are 2 different things. If i get pulled over and the cop asks for license and registration i dont pull out my title. I have a registration paper. There should be no new title issued. They should just need to make copies to send to dmv

I was talking about the types of registrations at the tag and title place earlier this year. Some things have changed. They no longer use the tag with the model A on it for Antique. Too many complaints.

I'm not sure at the moment but the one class, I'm thinking it's Classic, you only have to get the vehicle inspected once, when you first tag it.

Do your homework, things have changed, yet again...

Ok good on the "I got that" part, Hemi Rebel. Yes, likewise I do not know WHY the Pa.DMV needs to issue a "NEW TITLE", except that maybe, (I'll find out soon), the "NEW TITLE" will say "ANTIQUE" which then the "REGISTRATION CARD" (pa. calls it a "CREDENTIAL" now) that you carry in the car will reflect the "ANTIQUE" wording and match the "ANTIQUE PLATES".
Like I say I'm going to the table with a Copy of title first.
