I think the vinyl top takes away the " fat hip" look of the long C pillar and makes the car look "shorter" height wise and sleeker.

If it came with it, I'd put it back on.

Your car, your call.

If the factory originally put it on, then yes. I want the girl in the Add.

or her daughter now...LOL

Years ago I read that all superbirds had vinyl because the rough surface provided greater high speed stability. I remember them comparing it to the dimples on a golf ball. Since then I have been all in on vinyl tops; if it's good enough for The King, it's good enough for me.

Actually;
I think it was more to cover the plug they put in the rear window,
crappy body work, along with min. effort & time savings on the line,
to still use a reg. RR, Belv., Satty roof line & not make a different top just for Superbirds...

No track cars had vinyl top IIRC, I could be wrong...

I like a vinyl top on certain cars. I guess I'm particular but I love my black vinyl top on my burgundy 68 GTX. I've seen plenty without and prefer the ones with the top.

I like mine....but I might be a bit biased like that :icon_sunny:

As for rust....it usually only appears if the car sits out in bad weather, and wasn't installed correctly...or not maintained. Mine is perfectly fine and the roof was clean steel underneath when last replaced in 2001.

Had too many cars with rust issues because of them and become very jaded against them.....

I will be putting the black back on my charger 500 with the Orange bottom to keep it how it was rolled off the floor. You do have to maintain them but they are not the most expensive item to replace either though.

Haha, what you say makes sense. So funny, because I remember that high speed stability explanation so well, I guess I drank the cool aid haha

I absolutely HATE vinyl tops,period.

However- I found a potential secret source if you absolutely have to put one back on in a hurry or on a budget.

Jo-Ann fabrics.

I got enough to do a canopy included the A pillars in one section without seams.

$18 on the clearance rack, and the grain is super close.

View attachment 307696Yes. I think they add a lot to the looks of the old cars. I think they look better on some cars than others. But I do hate the maintenance issues that come with them.

So, does anyone with a 71 charger know if the rear window trim on a vinyl top car is black?
