I have a coronet 440 4door with a 318 and want to find out how early it was in production.... the engine block was cast 9-8-66 thanks in advance to anyone who can help

I don't know when the switch over was for coronets, but I know the switch over for 66/67 Chargers was July/August... maybe around the same time for them too?

I think so also... so another question is how many 318's could they have made in a few months? I will bet my 318 is the earliest one running on a std. bore and before I tore it down survivor....

It depends on the plant as to when production actually started. I have WP271004** on file with an SPD of 819 (August 18, 1966). Production of the '67s started a little 'earlier' compared to some years.

If the engine was cast in September, figure it was a week or so before assembly then another week before installation. So an early September casting may have gone in a late September/early October car. That's not particularly 'early'. What is the actual assembly date of the engine stamped on block?

The number made would depend on demand. The 318 was a very common engine and they made a significant amount of them.

It's impossible to know how many are still out there in STD bore. Any guess would be just that... a guess and not based on any available information.

Basically one of the earliest examples of a LA 318 sits in my car... and there is no real way to tell.... but there were a few months of production prior to get the tooling right.... I am satisfied with that....

If Mopar was consistent through the years, my 69' Cuda is an (801) 1 august date, the very first day of production. In the past I did have a July date for another Plymouth Belvedere, that was one of the last built for the model year 66. So there were likely 1 aug Coronets built as well.
