heres my problem I got about 2grand to build a motor I have 383. I dont want a big race 9sec car ,just a cruiser to play now and then. the car will be a 4spd,man brakes and steering, with 355suregrip.any suggestions and poss spec /part numbers for a budget build:confused::confused::confused:

How about a stroker? Not to sure what it will cost......horse power=money, how fast you wanna go?

just drive to car shows ,some smokey burnouts now and then prob alittle better than stock. for now when I hit the lottery then its the crate hemi!!!!LOL

What you will need for sure are hard seats in the heads and probably the rest of the work that goes along with. That can be over $500.00 with some new valves and springs, valve job, etc... The short block may get by with a hone and rering and a crank polish. How's the cooling system? Belts, ignition, exhaust? Factor this in the cost as well. Hit the swap meets for a used intake, carb and headers. If you have a low CR engine then you can't put a big cam in it and expect it to run well. $2K doesn't go too far these days so be ready for some creative thinking, trading and elbow grease.

I will be building the motor myself, execpt for machine work, prob just hone if poss.rering, polish the crankand new bearings. I know about the seats in the heads .and other stuff there. I guess my question is what cam ,intake, headers, carb, since I am on a small budget dont want to buy the wrong stuff first then need different stuff later
thanks for any info

I'd start with a 440 same basic costs other than picking up a builder.
find some mopar buddies in your area and see if they have any good used parts to get you started. 2000$ isn't much more than a basic build IMO. you have to start with true straight cylinders and pistons that fit the holes that "seal" to make consistent power.

General, I just got done building my 383 I thought I'd be building a budget build but it quickly went the other direction. Machine work on my engine came in the form of $1400 although I did have him build the short block so you could knock down the price about $250. I also had the engine balanced which was $250. The machine work done was as follows: bore and hone cylinders, align hone block, block deck surface, recon the rods, hang and align pistons, polish crank, there was also a few things I had him do that you could probably do yourself like install cam bearings and such. As far as research I've done about prices most cams are all the same price it just depends on what you want. The intake I used was Eddy Performer RPM which I found on craigslist after searching for months for one to pop up. For headers I think for the money Doug's would be best I've heard the fitment is near TTI but about $300 less, granted they don't have 1 7/8" tubes but everyone has said the 1 3/4" will be just fine for a 383. I'd find a carb on craigslist holley 750s are all over the place there. I'm not to sure though if you'll come up under $2k.

2k is to do parts and machine work grant it I might not get all the parts like carb and so on. my goal is to get it built and in the car.

I'd look for a rebuilt motor (with receipts) that someone is trying to get rid of.

$2000 will be close to enough for machining and parts. Just don't get carried away with any of it. I can recommend a good shop (they do all my work) but they're gonna be about 1400 miles from you
