Door locks? 69 road runner

Now this is weird. I just noticed today that when I lock my doors, either with the key or by pushing the door lock down, when I close the door, if I push the door handle button the door lock goes up and the door opens. WTF??? Please help!!!

On my '70, I have to lock the door with the key after it's closed. It pops up if it's locked before closing the door.

If you mean that the door is shut and locked, and then you press the outside button, and it unlocks, most likely the rod is crossed. Take the panel off, and feel the rods by the striker, there are plastic clips holding them in place. Slide the clip off the rod, then pull the rod off, switch the two so they are clear of each other.

I think Photon means if he pushes the lock down then pushes the door shut the lock pops back up on it's own which may be to prevent locking your keys in the ignition. I remember some old cars you could push the lock down with the button pushed in and the close the door and it would remain locked. My 68 doesn't work that way but may be screwed up.

I was talking to friend about this issue at a cruise in last Friday. He said let me see the keys. He walked over stuck the key in and said, try it now. Sure enough it was locked. I was like WTF. He said Greg, turn the left, till you hit detent, turn it again and it's locked. Sure enough that's how it works. I felt like a total idiot. We had a good laugh about it. All is well.
