How can I save my vin when painting the door? Should I mask it off or is there a removal process that works that would allow me to put it back on after paint?

Unless you have the need to keep it perfectly original, I would recommend taking measurements, pictures of orientation so you can replace it after paint. There is a company that will make you a brand new one that looks just like the original.

This is where I got mine from. It's not inexpensive (around $100) but it looks great on top of the new paint so I think it's worth it. I have had no issues with peeling either, just make sure you put it where you want it.

The originals are tamper resistant and will separate the clear from the backing.
