So just recently my car has decided to surge real bad in drive while stopped, at first I thought low idle, then thought electrical as there is a very minor miss in park. Now I am wondering if its the torque converter. I had to bump up the idle 200 rpm as it almost felt like it was going to stall.

Thought?

I did find a burnt spark plug boot at #8 fixed that but the issue still remains, I have yet to trace every wire but have checked the boots at the plugs and the rest look ok. seem tight. MSD 6al failing? even more simple cap and rotor? they look ok but...

mine does similiar things, surge at low rpm in 1st gear and when at lights i go to take off and it neally stalls.
i believe mine is carb tuning related, i have it booked in for a dyno tune in 2 weeks to fix everything up.

How much are you spending on your dyno tuning? and do you trust the guys doing the tuning?

the dyno tune here is $450.00 for 2 hours and $125 every hour after that. he reckons he can do it in 2 hours, unless he has to re-graph the distributor etc.

Yeh i trust him, i have been chatting every now and again to him for about a year.
alot of forums his name is mentioned as being one of the most honest and best engine guys here in australia.
he builds his own brand of carbs which are supposedly one of the best in the world (i dont know how true this is though) http://www.zokracecarbs.com.au/

I notice what I would car a surge when walking it through the neighborhood at the posted 15 mph. Not noticed at any other speed. TKO 5. 850 Demon. Plugs just looked too good to change, put them back in. Recent, don't remember noticing it before. Maybe I am mis-remembering like the news guy?

could be a lot of things going on. one thing a lot of folks miss is good electrical grounds. poor grounding can make them run stupid. low rpm carb tuning is a big factor. this is something i really go after.

Did find another burnt plug boot at #6 pissing me off havent fired it yet to see if that fixed it yet but decided to go two routes, since it's looking more like a misfire /shorted plug.

1st, buying traditional style metal heat shields like on other mopars, will have to cut and weld to fit my app. they bolt to the exhaust flange bolts and provide an extra shielding at least I hope. Something like this.

2nd. Getting 2 straight and 2 90° ceramic boots from the hot rod co. to go over the #7 & #8 plugs since these seem to be the two trouble makers

See them here, a bit pricey with shipping but still better than a whole set of accell 9000 ceramics that have the wrong boots on the distributor end.

Hopefully all this combined with the DEI socks over that will stop this madness. If not and it turns out to be the torque converter well then I will be expecting a fat trans shop bill :(

Hey Ben thats about what they want here in NorCal for Dyno tuning and same for additional time after the first two lol but I don't know them at all so hard to trust strangers.

Have a racer friend if I can ever get him pinned down long enough to go through stuff lol always seems to be some issue holding me up like this surging, just replaced the power steering pump too lol

Ok, so it was a miss, I fired it after replacing #6 & #8 boots. Got the heat shields today from Vans. Already cut and began the modification on them just need to tack weld them up, still waiting of the ceramic boots. Hope it all helps. Just sux that the MSD 8mm boots melt so easy.

Interesting part is the surge itself, It felt like the converter was letting loose or stuck but then again at 200 psi cylinder pressure I guess when one or two doesn't fire at low rpm the motor will lurch out, just weird.
