Driveshaft issues

What are you guys with later trans running for driveshafts in your 64-65 Bbodies. The shaft that was in my Belvedere was was too long. It was jammed up against the ballon seal at ride height. Almost had to use a prybar to get it in. The car has the stock rear spings with a 69 727 with the slip yoke. Anybody know a length? I put a shaft in out of a 97 ram 2wd and it is about 2 inches shofter than what was in there.. just not confident in it.
 
See your local driveline shop and have one made, or see your local driveline shop with what you have and let them check to make sure its right or safe.

That's the problem. I don't have a local driveline shop. The closest one is a 5 hour drive away in another province. Otherwise I would have had a new one made up. I have to provide my yoke as well to get one made. That is why i need info from others who who've had one made and where they got it and what they got. And or what they are using. Can't tell me that every person who ever did the ball and trunion to late tailshaft swap has had one made. This info gives me a place to start. the ram one in the car works for now but needs balancing. I can drive the car a bit in the meantime to get some work done on the car while I have one done up specific for the car.
 
I got one from Bear Performance in ON. Talked through the measurements on the phone. FedEx brought it a couple of weeks later.
 
Shipping is the killer there. I'll look them up and see what they can do. Worst come to worst, I'll send mine away and have it balanced.
 
You should have about 1.5" of free play into the tail shaft with the car sitting static. Wouldn't have thought a truck drive shaft would have fit....but why does it need to be balanced?
 
I had to change the yoke as the splines wouldn't line up. It has combination joints in it as well. I'm going to call and order a new one for the car. I'll give them the yoke and measurements.

Have you called around to the local big truck shops, many big truck shops in order to be a spicer or dana dealer have to be able to balance shafts to maintain warranty work.

Anytime you change a slip yoke or flange you have now changed the balance as the shaft was not balanced that way.

Just changing joints can and many times will effect the balance, especially when the other parts of the shaft weren't indexed and just put on.

When changing gears say from 3.5 to 4.5 will put the shaft into a area it was not balanced for and cause it to be rebalanced.

You can't go by that, 1.5" and a 4" GH surface slip yoke and you can have problems. There are to many different slip yokes and they are all different lengths.

Let the driveline shop determine what you need when they get the slip yoke you're using or make the shaft and new slip.

On his car, anything less than 1" isn't enough and anything more than 1.5" is too much......and I'm aware of the different slip yokes.
 
The slip yoke is a crazy long one that is at least 8 inches long. I never saw one like that before. The splines start about 2.5 inches down inside. I have a yoke that came with my 69 Chrysler trans. I can't remember the numbers for either yoke off hand.
 
Try a shaft and yoke from a '65 B body Plymouth (Dodge is longer wheelbase) with a 727. Should work perfectly if your engine is on the stock mounts and the rear end is located stock.
 
65 still has the trunion style tailshaft. My buddy has one. Already thought of that.
 
"65 with a 727 should be a slip yoke. 4 speed and 904 had a ball and trunnion.
 
Weird, My Buddy has a 65 Belv with a cable(column) shift 727 and it is the trunion style. I just helped him reinstall after painting the car. It is the only other 64-65 Plymouth in this province. If I can get my hands on a 65 shaft I will. Thanks for the info.
 
try denny's drive shafts they build them from scratch. I had one built for my car from them good people to work with also they have a measurement guide that could help you find one that will work. www.dennysdriveshaft.com

There are many slips like that, even the 904's used many different length slips.'


If you get the full measurement of the slip yokes ground hub surface and then how much of the ground hub is exposed you'll get your answer.

If it is a 1965 273 or slant car, it will most likely be a 904 with a ball and trunnion. I know that there was some sheet metal differences in some Canadian cars, compared with the U.S. versions, but I assume that mechanically, they were and are the same as US vehicles.
 
I can't remember offhand but seems to me it was a 361 or 383 car by the codes. Came from Conneticut. Was in Long Island and at some point Tennessee. Now has a built 440 in it with the 727 Ball and Trunnion style. Was bought off this site last May. There are a few differences in US and Canadian Cars. More interior related. And some trim level differences.
