Measuring for a local driveshaft complany to cut me a shaft-
my 72 Satellite has a 440-727 Auto

Definitly dont want to screw this up as my 8 3/4 rear end is off a 69 GTX
So it may not be exact to specs ...:argue:

Using the below link I can get a general idea of the #rs i should give them-

http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/app/webroot/img/File/how_to_measure_diagrams/b.html

Any other tips from you guys before i give the final numbers-

Also i was worried if I order the exact size it may need some room to wiggle into place... hate to order wrong/waste $

Shaft measurement.....

Insert the slip yoke into the rear of the transmission and slide it all the way in, (don't force it). Measure from center ot the u-joint cup on the yoke to the center of the u-joint cup on the pinion yoke. Deduct 1".

This will give you maxinum yoke insertion and still allow enough movement to install the shaft assy without interference.

If you anticipate a lot of "joust"-"rebound" in the rear then you may add 1/2" to the above measurement, but 1" generally works fine.

Doesn't matter what car the 8 3/4 came from....they all measure the same and I like to use no less than 1 1/4" with 1 1/2" being maximum.

Thx for the info -gonna drop off the measurment at the shop on sunday
-Heading to Niagra falls for a wedding this weekend- should be a fun birthday:)
Hope everyone has a nice weekend

You should really ask the driveline shop doing the shaft for you. .

1. are you using the slip yoke or are they supplying everything

then the above measurement isn't right , as slip yokes differ from eachother

2. if they are supplying the entire shaft then you measure seal to center of joint in the end yoke and output shaft to center of joint in the end yoke

3. all of that is done at ride height.

4. Do not pull slip yokes out 1.25 and 1.5 and believe that is correct, it is not, there are countless styles of all slip yokes, they are different and some do not have very long ground hub areas, say you have a short slip and pull it 1.5" out , when it needed to only have .75 of travel, now it's riding in 1.5" and of that 1" or less is in the bushing. .

Talk with the shop doing it, they'll either want it with the slip IF you're re-using that slip or they'll want the seal and output shaft to center method.

They usually supply or you print out a sheet for the measurements that they require.I had them make one for my hot rod and was top notch stuff.
