Story of my lifeWas it a foot too long?
If the car had a 727 in it before, then the drive shaft should still fit regardless of the engine size. The place where the bell housing bolts to the engine is pretty much in the same place in relationship to the car. And there sure wouldn't be 11" difference because of a different engine and there's only 4" difference between a 904 and the 727.
The 'A' body might have a shorter tail shaft. I know the 4 speed comes like that in them but in all the other cars, a 727 has the same TS. Some trucks and motor homes also come with a short tail shaft 727 but they have a bolt on yoke instead of a slip in. Here's a link to transmission length info.....I thought the small block 727 was shorter? I guess my motor and trans was MIA so it could have been a 904 originally.
