I'm getting ready to install the drive shaft and was wondering if I should upgrade. I'm expecting to be somewhere around 500 ft lb and don't want to chance a driveshaft failure. My driveshaft is out of a 68 RR with the 1.125 caps on the universal joints and is going on a 727 451 combo. I don't think I have anything to worry about seeing how it will be a street car and will never have slicks on it. So what do you think? what kind of abuse are these capable of handling?
 
Supershafts will probably see this and give you a good idea. He's real sharp at it since he runs a driveline business.
 
at 500 pounds you will be just fine.make sure to use good quality u joints and no worries.your non slicks rear tires creat a good safety device with there loss of traction.what kind of rear suspention are you running?
 
Suspension is all new but still leafs and torsion bars. I went to the store today to buy U joints, they just had the regular ones so I had them order the high strength ones.

Yeah, I call those round black things with grooves "the fuse" or "the fusible link".
 
The 7260 joint is a strong joint if it's not china, your local parts store is most likely china and brute force/neapco is china.
I have many a 7260 series shafts in plenty of SS class cars, they are using the spl22-8x or the 5-789

You built a good motor, might as well continue the trend with the rest of the car, you don't have to change the series, but why not upgrade that 45yr old heavy shaft and gain some performance and mpg from a new lighter shaft?
When you wear shoes would you rather the heavier or lighter?
When you buy tires do you buy the heaviest brand hurting your performance and mpg?
 
I've been way past that with the stock unit. I went chromoly once I chucked a u-joint. At 500ft/lbs at the flywheel and no slicks, you won't have a problem with anything but your tire budget....
 
Yeah, I might hunt you down in the future for a shaft, what's the cost? I'm honestly trying to keep it as cheap as possible right now because I am planning on either installing a Gear Vendors Overdrive or a TKO 500 as soon as possible. I always ask for non Chinese parts when I get parts but totally dropped the ball on this one, hopefully they're not. Thanks
 
stock shaft will be fine for what your doing, your parts store should be able to order you a spicer u joint.
 
Biggest thing to remember here is to check pinion angle. Make sure a leaf spring car has 5-7 degrees down in relation the the rear of the shaft. I've hammered a stock 7260 shaft for years with slicks at 3875lbs mid 11s. Friends with slower cars with stock angle have broke joints and tail shaft housings. Added pinion angle to both cars, problem solved.
