any suggestions for a dropped base air cleaner on a 1969 coronet with 440, m1, quick fuel 750 with electric choke? I'm looking at the Mancini drop base but wanted input. Thanks!

Literally just got that drop base or “low profile” from Mancini racing. The black one for like 26 bucks, fits perfect on my double pumper, I don’t have a choke but I bet it will clear. It clears everything else and have about 1/2 inch between my stock air cleaner and hood. I have a edelbrock performer rpm on my 440 and I believe it’s a taller intake then the M1

For what its worth, dropped-base air cleaners can actually kill horsepower. If you're getting the lid too close to the air horn you will be choking off air flow. Here is a link to an Engine Master episode on air cleaner testing. This is on a dyno, under hood conditions are probably worse.

Sorry, the video may have commercials in it.

If dropped bases kill HP what are my choices to be able to close my hood. A super short standard air cleaner?

It all depends on how much clearance you do have between the lid and the carb. Their test is showing that if you have a 3" filter, there is a horsepower loss between a flat and drop base. The air flow has to go in, up, and then down with a drop base. Afterall, it won't do you any good to have spent good money on a great intake and carb setup, only to choke it off.

Copy that. First order of business is figure out my clearance. Thanks.

This is why I have been using a standard 1.25" drop base along with a K&N element and a K&N open top.

How do u explain an 18 time national record holder that runs a stock old chevy drop base on his superstocker w/ no scoop, or anything else on the carb.? he raced for over 40 years and his car is well science out. It does slow down a hair w/o the base on it !! His carb is the correct one for a 1955 / 265 chevy. I watched that video too, air flowing up and over in a smooth flow is better than a flat base, or none at all on his . That being said, I run a taller air filter w/ my dropped base. I WOULD LIKE TO RUN THE SALAD BOWL W/ AN AIR FILTER TOP > LOL

I don't need to explain anything and certainly have no clue as to the mystery racer you are referring. I offered info that (backed up by the video) if the air cleaner lid is too close to the carb you CAN lose horsepower. Didn't say he would, don't know what his clearance is. Information to consider. Nothing to get all riled up over.

I had the same hood clearance problem on my '69 Coronet, 440 (stroked to 505) with RPM air gap and Holley. I originally went with a 6-pack scoop and even taller filter element, but would like to see what others have done?
I could have tried a deeper drop base or shorter filter element that may have worked, but the lid still seems too close to the carb top for my liking.
Now I have changed my intake to the Edelbrock XT EFI intake when changing to EFI. The throttle body is front mounted so the whole setup us under the hood, but it also creates other issues like needing a really long throttle cable, 90-degree thermostat housing, and air intake tubing to the filter.
I'm curious how a carb hat would flow N/A, and fit? They seem to normally be used on blow through boosted applications.

It seems a Mancini dropped base and the tallest filter I can shove under the hood makes the most sense. Surface area, and keeping the air filter lid as far away from the carb base as I can feasibly do and close the hood. Or just cut a hole in the hood and go blown 440! Lol.

Blown is always good. Hate to ruin a good metal hood.

If you're concerned about restricting too much flow, a good option is the K&N X-stream style or an equivalent. They also make bases with different amounts of drop to suit your needs, Summit has all of it

There is no hood clearance problem on a 55 chevy, w/ a small block in it. I merely stated that u don't know what the hell ur talking about. He runs no filter or top on it, it is a drag only superstocker. I will believe what I see and he tells me over a video made by who knows , any day. He`s like Andy, trailbeast , stansblu 72, iq52, and a few others on here, u can tell who knows there ---t, by what they post. Don't take this personally , I have never been good w/ words. I pretty much say what I think tho.

I only take things personally from people that matter to me. I don't know you, so I really don't care what you think. I really don't think you understand the conversation. You talk about having no air cleaner at all, and I was discussing a drop base air cleaner. Well no ****, Bob, drag racers have been running with no air cleaners forever. And your talking about hood clearance in a '55 Chevy with a small block, when the OP has a '69 Coronet with a 440. They're not very similar. Since you don't know who made the video, and didn't take the time to research it, here you go:
David Freiburger - Former Editor of Hot Rod, Hot Rod Deluxe, Car Craft, Rod & Custom, and 4-Wheel & Off-Road. Member of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club.
Steve Dulcich - Staff Writer at Hot Rod
Steve Brule' - Engine builder and dyno operator at Westech Performance
Yeah, they really have no idea what they're doing.
Maybe instead of saying what you think, you should start thinking about what you say. Less drinkin' and more thinkin'!

I watched the video too. I was referring to ur statement about dropped base air cleaner bottoms hurting performance, that and that only!! The guy I was referring to goes faster w/ a dropped base "only" on his carb,, than nothing at all. Which counteracts ur statement to start with. End of conversation for me ---don`t bother.
