Hey guys, I was doing some digging through muffler threads here on the forum and noticed a lot of you are running Dynomax mufflers. My combo is a 440 with hedman headers, 3" exhaust with x pipe and stock style Charger tips. My question is, is there a big difference in tone between the super turbo and ultraflo mufflers? I've seen both recommended pretty often but ultraflo's are stainless and a little more expensive.

I was originally looking at thrush's chambered mufflers since they seem practically identical to flowmasters without the price tag, so any opinion/experience with those would also be appreciated. Just noticed a lot of people complain about the drone of those flowmaster type mufflers. I know "it's a muscle car, it's not supposed to be quiet" but I plan on doing some long roadtrips with the car and could do without any added damage to my sanity

"7DRRunner" posted this video of his car with Ultraflo's in an older thread, and sparked my interest in Dynomax. Music to my ears..

That RR Sounds Amazing!

I've been all over the boards with this too. I switched from Thrush to Flowmaster 40's and noticed it was a bit louder through the RPM curve but about the same at cruising speeds... Neither have the "sound" I was looking for though.

From what I have read/heard/seen the Ultraflo's are a little bit Louder all around than the Super Turbo's and have a bit more of a "deep" Rich" tone that I love.

I had my heart set on Borla XR-1's for a while because of this vid but now I'm second guessing everything again :(

Just run open headers, it'll give you the nice deep noise you want ;) haha

I was seriously going to consider QTP cut-outs but was told through time the flanges fail and don't close/open all the way or evenly.... It's a shame because that idea is cool!

What about the old school hot rod way? After the header on each side is a y-pipe, one pointing towards the outside of the car, blocked off by a bolted on plate and then the other one being the full exhaust. So when you're at the track or something, unbolt the plate and have an open exhaust. If I ever planned on street driving my car I would do it, but since it's track only I might as well leave the exhaust open.

Gave that some thought too... Seen that setup on a few cars here at the cruise nights... Honest truth for me I would never bother taking it off so why spend the $$ putting it on.

My GTX with h-pipe and ultraflo's

The Thrush welded ( Flowmaster old series 30) are a great muffler, they sounded like open headers with and "X" pipe setup.

My combo is TTI headers followed by QTP's followed by Dynomax Superturbos. The QTP's have to be 8 years old and have never failed. No drone on the freeway.

Ultra Flo's are straight through and sound good. The super turbo's are a bit poppy and sound funny to me at WOT. The UF's will make more power than the turbos or any chambered muff too, if you're concerned.

Can't say much about the stated mufflers (never ran them) but for me if it has any packing I won't buy them. If they have packing then they will eventually blow out besides I've always loved the flowmaster's deep throaty sound, fortunately for us they're patent ran out and everyone makes them now including Summits own brand.

The Dreaded Drone that some people talk about, is "usually" caused by too big of a exhaust pipe size, for your engine combo, making a resonance/reverb in the pipes & mufflers, not the mufflers fault, it's the wrong size of exhaust pipe & muffler pipe selection by the purchaser, for it's intended usage... It's not the muffler fault itself, usually... Go bigger isn't necessarily always better... Then also actually where you put the H-Pipe or X-pipe will effect resonance/reverb "Drone" too, there was an old trick to run a temporary 4ft straight pipe off the headers, the same size you plan on using, mark it with shoe polish or water base paint from about 15" down the pipe to about 40" down the pipe 1" wide or so, don't gob it on, start the car up let it run at idle for a few minutes, get to proper operating temperature, so the exhaust will be at reg. operating temperatures, then bring the RPM's up-to about 4000, hold it there for like 20 seconds IIRC, where the major discoloration ends/occurs on the stipe you painted down the temporary piece of pipe, that's the true length of header extensions you "should have" or where to install you cut-outs if that's what your doing or where you "should install the leading edge of the H-Pipe or X-Pipe" in your exhaust system, especially if you plan to run tail pipes, that will actually create a slight vacuum scavenging because that's where the exhaust gases are cooling & drawn out buy cooler air & it will actually give you the best exhaust scavenging effect, it can cut down on resonance/reverb unwanted dreaded drone too, that many claim is just caused by a certain muffler style... I run & have for years, Flowmasters Delta 50 Thunder Series 3" mandrel exhaust system out the back, I love the tone/sound & drone doesn't seem to bother me at all {or my girlfriend}, I like my cars a little obnoxious, not purring like a little pussy cat, it's a muscle car/performance car, they are supposed to be a little obnoxious... Aren't they ??... or has everyone building cars today just been castrated ??, sorry guys/gals, I had to do/say that... Most guys/gals people who run a dual 3" exhaust system, with basically stock or mild performance combos, could probably just run Y-pipe to a single 3" system & good muffler & then still be more than adequate... Or run a smaller dual 2"-2.250" exhaust system, follow the same procedures... Ok I'm done now... :merrychristmas:

I agree.......I just put a set of Flowtech "red hots" on my 65 Dodge race car, just to make it "street legal".........it is almost as loud as it was coming straight out of the 3" headers but it is a muffler so...... it is legal here!:yes:

Thanks for all the input guys! RE:cutouts, I had the oldschool wingnut types on my Chevelle and never had any issues but yeah I've heard nothing good about electric dumps. Everyone says they leak, which does suck since the idea of ruining the neighborhood at the flip of a switch always sounds fun lol.

Now back to the mufflers! The ultraflo's posted do sound awesome! Although when I listen to Will's bird running turbo's it sounds pretty close. Hopefully he'll chime in on why he picked one over the other.

Mar, what made you go with the ultraflo's??

And 747, yeah that's why I was originally thinking about going with the thrush mufflers. Me and my friend that builds these cars for a living looked at the chambering design side by side, and it was pretty well identical to the flowmasters. That '70 rr with superflo's just sings to me! :eusa_drool:

LOL, "yeap" loud and obnoxious.

Just out of curiousity on the topic of mufflers does anyone here run Glasspack's? Cherry Bomb... Thrush or whatever?

When I was young....er.. than I am now that's what I use to put on all my pickups and exit out the side... great for "BLASTING" people as we called it!

Here Speedy I found a video and got it uploaded just for you ;)

I guess I'm calling this the "before" since the motor and exhaust are getting changed this winter but this is

383 - 2 1/2" to Flowmaster 40's and 2 1/4" out the rear

I was having the same dilemma as you Speedy, and finally just gave up trying to decide and ordered the TTi kit that comes with the Super Turbos. I'll let you know what they sound like next spring, but I have a feeling that won't be soon enough for you.
