My 65 coronet, just about on the road and having a few problems. Biggest involves whether I put money in my original 727 or buy/build a newer one. I have heard building and living with an early 727 - 1965, different spline count - is not worth it. I want to retain original console and shifter and heard going to later model trans will require a different shifter. Anyone know if this is true ? Also, anyone have opinions on if I should go to an overdrive unit ? It's a street driven, 410 geared, 540 HP driver, just my toy but it would be nice to drive on the highway.

Thanks

You can install the later model input shaft, reaction support and rear clutch retainer. Now all the late converter stuff fits. While your at it you can get the wide bushing front drum and matching reaction shaft support as well. I run this in my 9.30 Belvedere. I'm located in S.E. Mi. if you don't do your own trans I can do it for you.

Before converting to 4 speed, I was running a 1965 BB 727 in my Coronet. The trans was modified as an A990 clone and to use the later input with a TA 3800 convertor and I had a Turbo Action RMVB. No issues behind my stroker. I happen to have the whole setup for sale and I am leaving for SE Michigan, tomorrow morning.

Thanks guys, PM's sent. Anyone else have input, I would appreciate it. Always the best advice on here.

If originality is out the window, personally if I'm making a change, it's going to OD. With those 410's in back, the highway will be much nicer.

Least expensive route is to go to Doug and upgrade what you have.Next is an OD trans, and the most expensive would be a manual set up.

Ill NEVER give up my pushbutton shifter!!!

Thanks guys. Again, kinda' just learning all this trans stuff. Any idea what is involved with an OD trans ? Where to buy or can mine be modified ? If going to overdrive, can stock shifter and cables all be used ? That would really be my preference until I can do manual swap for a KIESLER - $$$$$$ so that's a long way down the road if ever.

This is what I did:

I put a 700R4 in my B-body for around $740. The nice thing about this trans is it is easier to fit into a Mopar than most other overdrives. I will be working on doing the same thing in a '56 Plymouth. I plan to use a "push-pull" industrial cable to shift it with the original push buttons. Check this out:
https://www.cccables.com/cables/pushpull.aspx
It will require that the detent spring on the trans be bent up to soften the shifting force, but it shouldn't be too difficult to do. I'm sure you could do something similar with your cable shifter.
