I am looking at a 64 Polara and I see it has new exhaust on it. I haven't seen it from underneath so I don't know much about it yet. I did see the tail pipe tips come straight out under the bumper. I looked through a couple hundred photos and saw that the tips are supposed to be turndowns which can be changed on this one. Has any one used chrome tips like off a Roadrunner on these early cars? Just curious as to what it would look like.

I think they could look very nice. Somebody here must be a good photo shop guy.

That's what I thought they might be a nice look. I sure don't like the old man driving a pick up look of the straight tips.

I always thought they looked a bit out of place. I prefer the 68-70 styles including the charger ones.
The GTX sat right behind the 64 so of course I had to snap a pic or two. I saw the tips at an angle and thought someone did a custom install. They are different for sure.

I've always thought the 70 RR tips gave the car a distinctive growl, there's lots of good videos where you can listen but here's my favorite:

1964 factory exhaust were turned down tail pipes. First Mopar chrome exhaust tips were the slanted ones on 1967 GTX. Curiously, 1967 R/T did not get a chrome tip. After 1968, they were an option on just about everything.

The turndowns probably look more “period” on the early 60’s but… as a hot rodder myself, anything goes!

A long, long time ago - 68/69 GTX/Road Runner tips on my 64. I thought they looked great.

Headers with bolt on purple hornies , but one has to be touching the cross member.

I noticed the straight tips right away. Didn't care for them.
I've got turndowns on my 62, but short of the rear splash panel, so they are hard to see.
With that 64, I'd either use chrome turndowns that can be seen...... or standard steel turndowns well short of the bumper.
But there are LOTS of tip styles, pick what YOU like, I wouldn't care what mopar did fifty years ago. (Or sixty!)
Summit has over a thousand listings for exhaust tips.
