I'm not very familiar with these intakes. I assume they are a max wedge intake with inner changeable carb plates. I would like to get educated on these things.

Are they a superior intake? Do they only work with max wedge heads? Do they out perform other intakes? What's the advantages to using one of these STR 14's?

The STR stands for Street Tunnel Ram and is an old intake design based on some solid engineering principals. Runner length designed for optimal peak torque at a specific RPM range in a configuration to fit under most hoods. It does work very well but is a fuel distribution nightmare and the old DC book has some good info on how to modify them to work properly. They do not fit the Max Wedge heads but can be modified to fit. The conventional high rise tunnel ram is the replacement and works right out of the box because there are no inherent fuel distribution issues, but you have to cut a hole in your hood to use it. These days there are plenty of intakes that will equal or even out perform the STR, so if you just want the performance then just use something modern. But if you want the nostalgia look then the STR is hard to beat.

One thing I forgot to mention is they were used for super stock racing and possibly their sole purpose of existence. Edelbrock made them with a Chrysler part number so they can be considered a factory part thus being NHRA legal. Between the STR 14 and 15 there were 4150 4 BBL tops, 4500 4 BBL, 6 BBL, 2x4 BBL (inline or cross ram style), TQ and even a 2 BBL. The Weiand six BBL tunnel ram is another example of a "factory" part used for racing.

Yeah I've seen them at swap meets, priced like gold. Was just wondering what the story was behind these intakes.
