I am changing my stock distributor set up to a summit racing electrical distributor conversion kit. The kit comes with a ECU and my question is: do I replace my stock voltage regulator with the new ECU that comes with my conversion kit? Or will I have to still keep my stock voltage regulator connected and wire the new ECU seperatly. I am keeping my regular starter and not upgrading anything else. Thank you for your help.

YES, upgrade your VR. Read here. http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Electrical/charging.htm

Early Charging System modified for use with a 70 style VR

There are a number of reasons one might want to upgrade a per-1970 system to a transistorized voltage regulator. The list of reason include
  • Chrysler recommends you switch to a transistorized VR if you upgrade to an electronic ignition from a points style ignition.
  • If you have to buy a new voltage regulator, the difference in cost is only about $5-10 more for the transistorized unit. Not to mention, the quality of replacement early style VR's is spotty.
  • The transistorized VR will have a longer life.
Below is a diagram describing how to install a 70 and later Voltage Regulator on a sixties mopar.

Mikey- I changed over last summer w/o changing the VR. After much reading I went to a transistorized regulator just recently. Probably much better regulated voltage, I do notice a little less jumping around of the original amp gauge on my '68.

thank you for your help. Please post pics of your ECU and new voltage regulator set up.

Just an F.Y.I., my car had the conversion done before I bought it, but it still had the old mechanical OEM regulator. Until I installed a volt meter, I had no idea it was overcharging. The overcharging eventually took out the ECU and left me on the side of the road. I yanked the OEM regulator and replaced it with a Wells VR706 (Visible in the attached picture)

and it sits at the proper voltage ever since.

Yup ranger same VR..Works great.
