Engine only turns counter clockwise.

Hi folks,

Rebuilt 383 (4 speed a833) that rotated fine both directions but now that it is installed it will only rotate counter clockwise, like butter - if I try to go the other direction it just locks. I thought maybe it was in gear but no. I feel like it might have something to do with the transmission but it goes into all the gears and reverse fine. I have not run the engine since rebuild.

It’s in a 73 Duster.

You have the crankshaft installed backwards or upside-down.

Maybe the sheetmetal flywheel inspection cover is hitting the flywheel ?

Don’t have the cover. Turns fine counter clockwise, just not clockwise.

Yes it is bolted in. Could that be the problem? Never even thought of that!

Can you turn engine more than 1 turn CCW. I wouldn't hit the starter until your sure you don't have some in a cylinder. A long flywheel bolt?

You wont know until you take two bolts out.

Oh, ok, you're at that point. You're attempting to rotate the engine with the crank bolt ?

Yes, correct. Tomorrow I will remove the starter and see what happens.

Have you removed the inspection cover and observed any motion while trying to turn the engine ?
