Could be a code for a cast crank.. Not sure to be honest.

The maltese cross could be rods and mains and not necessarily all of them. Crank could stamped what journals are undersized. See picture. Main 5 and rod 5/6 7/8 are -.001.

The 2nd part of my problem is the letter stamped in the top of each piston. Some have a B some have a D and some have a C. I'm guessing this means that particular bore is slightly larger. What do y'all think?

It's mentioned in SM on Hemi's.

Yes. The variance in bore sizes are marked with A through D painted on the side of the block. When assembled at the factory, the pistons were mated with the corresponding letters.

May seem like a dumb question but, how do you order rings sets ? File to fit?

How is your piston to wall clearance, does it need an over bore? If not you could buy .005 o/s rings? Wait for others to comment on that.

Does not need boring very low mileage, I'm just going to freshen it up.

When I built the 440 in my Superbird, it was just a refresh and the bores were stock with 0-3 thousandths variation and no ridge. I used file to fit rings on the original pistons. Rods and mains were standard and went standard also. Clearances checked fine in assembly. I realize we are talking Hemi, but knowing what you have going in should tell you what you need going back.

I agree, I'm not building a large horsepower engine. Just solid strong cruiser that has good sound and good tire smokability

During my teardown as noted above I found a Maltese cross on the I'd pad. Upon inspection of the rod and main bearings all of the mains were marked standard size. The rod bearings all had no markings, with the exception of 1 pair that were marked .001 US . So my question is are all the rod bearings .001 undersized or just the one rod journal?

Read post #6 undersized rod journals are marked on one of the crank counter weights.
