Want to paint my engine when done putting it together. Should I prime it? Also any rattle can Hemi orange engine paint that has some gloss? Seems like most engine paint fades out fast and looks like crap. If primer is used what type? POPS

Personally I love the results with por 15 engine enamel, thin and spray with a gun or foam brush straight out of the can. Finish lasts a long time and is far more resistant to gasoline.

If you have access to 2k primer a light coat on the clean block. I know I've seen in the past urethane paint formulas for various Chrysler engine colours, grab a code and run to Arnies and get a pint of urethane mixed up and shoot your motor. At least with urethane it will be really durable, downside its super glossy and a looong time to fade back. Bill Hirsch paints are good, I haven't tried Eastwoods engine paint yet, they have a nice store over in Alsip.

Call frank badalson.
He has the correct sheen and color and it will last a lot longer than a rattle can job.
He sells PPG enamel mixed in his proprietary codes.

If you don't plan on driving the car and it's just for looking at, and you don't care if the color or sheen is correct, ratte can paint will be fine.

I will put my "rattle can" paint job against anyone here....this year, next year and 10 years down the road.......With anything paint related PREP is critical.......

I typically do not use primer and just prep the block well. My last build I used engine enamel primer....Mainly because I knew it was going to get dyno and then over to another guy for finer tuning and run time.....Once back in my hands I sanded the primer down a lot and applied to color......

Under hood engine heat through time always fades the shine/sheen not only on the block but also the accessory components.....That is why the majority of OE correct builds to a high level are usually judged once in their life....

I use paint from Chaz Dallas....he was the supplier for Totally Auto....It is PPG in a spray can or you can buy for a gun....703-200-3302

I use hemi orange from Eastwood. Ceramic paint used with activator. Like some stated, prep work is the key, I don’t use primer. 30,000 miles later and it still great with no flaking or peeling. Used the same stuff after motor rebuild. Downside, it’s a little glossy at first but many miles later, begins to dull. Painted two motors with this stuff last couple of month, lays out pretty nice. One qt with activator is 50 bucks, two motors later and still have paint left.

I believe I ve seen his car in the lot while driving on IAA Dr. I 'll check it out.
I thought Bill moved to Springfield, and yes his daughter is a sharp cookie. Just don't have them mix you a can of Limco, looks good but not very durable.

Need to put lots of effort in prep work. And result is worth it.

I agree in prep. DX 440 grease and wax remover followed quickly with clean dry rags until the second rag comes off clean. Knock off the sharp burrs with a grinder. We use DP 90 epoxy primer then single stage urethane. I have motors that have been painted many years . The small block pictured was painted 15 years ago, the big block 6 years ago.

I just use a quick coat good Self etching primer. Then just use Duplicolor engine enamel paint cans on my engines. Even used Duplicolors wrinkle paint on my rocker covers & then baked it on with some infrared heat lamps with great results.
