im going to be putting together a temporary run stand to break in my 440 before pulling the 360 out of my charger. this is new to me as ive never ran an engine outside the car. i have manual temp and oil pressure gauges. this 440 has an electronic distributor. how do i wire this up to fire and run for 20 - 30 minutes? please share pics of yours.

i was more curious about temporary wiring to run and how people are doing it . is an alternator even necessary and how the wiring is set-up from the battery. is all this still ran through a starter relay and ignition box or is it just hot wired through the coil. i have wiring diagrams, but ive seen some where some of the components are bypassed temporarily for break in on stand

Same as you would in the car. Just pretend your run stand is the engine bay.

More info

Make sure the ECU is grounded.
B+ to starter
B- to Ground on engine block
Use a starter button and cross small lug on starter with B+
to turn the engine to start.

can this be done with a dual ballast and 5 pin ECU ? maybe using one side of the ballast? im asking because thats what i have at my disposal

for instance, can take the start and run ignition wires, tie them together , and run them straight to the + on the battery, ground the ECU and be good? and then run the + off the battery to the big stud on the starter with a push button starter switch to the solenoid? and of course the ground to the block

wiring

Yes but use just run wire and let the start wire unhooked.

The reason for the run and start is because during the crank position the ignition is supplied with battery voltage to start [ bypasses the resistor]and when the key is released the voltage is dropped down through the resistor. So as for your question I would not tie the wires together ,I would use the wire, the one through the resistor .I know that if you have the ignition switch on and it can start with relay starter switch when working under the hood.I have done that.

Heck, do it the easy way, just get an old points dist. and use it for the break-in!

yes a points style distributor could be used bet even a simple mallory unilite distributor could be used too, just power and ground for it.

yea , i agree. i think an old points set up would be the way to go for the break in. ive ran points for years and had good luck with them. it sounds like it would be the less complicated way to go
