Has anyone experience with these? I just fitted a set into my 505 stroker and there's quite a lot of mechanical noise. Not the ticking you get with a bad lifter, more like a loud rustle that seems to diminish a bit with RPM. I've gone through and set the preload at half a turn from zero lash a couple of times just to check.

It's running a Comp Hyd Roller cam, smiths custom pushrods and Harland Sharp Rockers.

Might be completely normal, I've just no experience on what this sort of set up should sound like!

Cheers.

Video would be helpful, also remember mopars have loud valvetrain noise. Kind of like a sewing machine. Nature of the beast.

Are you getting enough oil to rollers?

1. Check orientation of rocker shafts slot facing down, restriction in block leading to head properly sized? Rollers don’t like ideling, rocker restrictions in bushing facing correctly?

It's the whole Harland Sharp set up, inc the shafts. The oil holes are in line with the mounting studs. I'll run it up this eve and check the oiling again.

Oiling looks fine - it pools up on the top of the rocker shaft within half a minute of start up. I'll try and attach a short vid here - it's the clicking noise, particularly above idle when i blip the throttle. Still sounds like a lifter I think? Guess I could try adding another 1/4 turn of preload?

If you have a Comp XE cam, the have a sewing machine sound to them.

AFIK all HR conversions are made by Johnson, all have chevy size wheel- sigh
have you done the E3 shaft raise? Mid lift git the roller stripe on the valve tip as narrow as possible procedure?
picture of stripe?
Is your pushrod ball up near the bottom of the rocker?

B3

I've not done the B3 mod. 2 threads showing on all the adjusters with half a turn of preload, stripe looks good. I'll try adding a touch more preload, otherwise the only thing I can think is that a couple of the pushrods are interfering with the head. I'll pull the shaft and see if I can see any witness marks.

You have an exhaust leak at the header flange, and it sounds like you don't have enough preload on the lifters. You should also check the interference deal - the taller hydro rollers will put more angle on the pushrod. Not as bid of a problem as a small block but same idea. Also would be helpful to have a sweep pattern run to see how the parts are interacting.

It’s not any of the above. Google the XE 285 cam and you’ll hear it. Whether Mopar, Ferd or Chebby, that series is just got a sound to it.

Left to my own choices I would have done the same, BUT IQ52 says no hydraulic rollers, so I will be going mechanical. I don't put 2,000 miles a year on it, so I don't mind the occasional adjustment, but then again I think once it's adjusted a couple of times I should be good for awhile.
My 440 has always had what I thought was a noisy valvetrain, stock 452 heads and stock shafts and stock stamped arms. Switched from stock hydraulic flat tappet lifters to Comp Cams (springs, locks and retainers too). Performance went way up, but still "noisy".
Yours is definitely louder.

I google XE 285 and all I get are helieocopters
are you thinking of the HL or universal grind?
