It wasn't that the old gasket was still on it, was it? A double gasket will empty the engine in a hurry. I've never had a cross threaded filter, either - although I've tried.

I’m on the phone with the EPA.I did that once decades ago. Good thing I changed the oil out in the street. What a mess!
I have had a few that had defective threads and did not want to thread onto the engine.I've never even heard of an oil filter being cross threaded.
