Hey forum, im buying a 72 Fury soon probably in a couple days. I would like to know what model specific problems to check for before i find them the hard way. Reviving a few dead cars has taught me that they all have there own quirks. The car has a 400 BB, a 727 and a 3.73 sure grip. and is its rear axle too wide to install in a b-body?

Rear axle might work in a 71-74 B.
I know where 2 69-71 parts cars are.

Thanks YY1 but i wont need a parts car since this is the first complete and driveable car that ive ever purchased. Would the rear end work in a 68 b-body? id like to swap my 2.76 dog leg for this cars sure grip before i clean it up and sell it.

There's an axle backing plate and perch width chart somewhere.
Actually, there are two, but one says all 62-70 are the same and they are definately NOT.

You can see what might or might not work, and if the perches might need moved.
I wouldn't sweat anything over 1.5 inches, as that's 3/4 per side, and barely noticeable.

It looks like you have a 68/69. I'm more familliar with 66/67 and 73/74 (and some A body), but it might work, but also might change your back-spacing requirements for your wheels.

Can you just swap center sections? Is there already an 8 3/4 under the B?

i appreciate the response guys. i just purchased the car and found out its not even an 8 3/4 under there. it may be a dana or possibly a 9 1/4 but all i know is it has a bolt on gear cover.

9 1/4 is not a bad axle, especially if you are swapping in a sure grip 9 1/4 in place of a 7 1/4. All of my 66 cars came with 8 3/4s but the one 67 I had came with a 7 1/4.

According tho this chart-
http://www.mymopar.com/axledims.htm (even though the 66-70 info is not exact)

BP wdth/perch width of the C body 9 1/4 is 59/47.3 and your (if you had one) 68/69 8 3/4 should be 55/44.

So, it is roughly 4 inches wider (2" each side) and the perches are 3.3 farther apart.

I'm not gonna make a call on that one.

Per the chart, there is a late B body 9 1/4, that is only 1" wider per side.

If you don't do the swap, I'd at least pull the SG stuff. 9 1/4s are in Dakotas as well, so there's still a lot of market for those SG units.

I've had and parted a few 72's including the twin to yours. 72 should have an 8.75 as 74/5 was when they changed to the 9.25. Probably has been changed out. As said before, grab that gripper.
The dome light is the same as the 70/1 E body overhead console.
Might check to see if it has an early "230" 400 block.
C-body rear housing and alxes don't fit anything but a C body without cutting and welding and buying new axles, in other words, boat anchor.
727 fits most everything.

Thank you moparmarks, its good to know about the rear end. What makes an earl 400 different?
