While admiring my new Flex a lite 1817 I noticed that one of the rivets wasn't the same as the others. I flipped the fan over and noticed a washer on the back. I called Flex a lite to ask about this. They said it is a counterweight from when they balance the fan. This is what I suspected anyway, but it was freaking me out just a little bit especially since the 1818 I just ordered did not have this. I still think it is a little rare or unusual, but I will install the fan as soon as I get my new water pump tomorrow.

Everything that spins should be balanced, and yes fans also, when a fan is out of balance you'll know about it

What is weird is that there is no marks on the hub indicating it was hooked up to anything to spin it. Unless it is a rubber mount. Also, if they are using the same hub, the same blades, the same backing plate and so on then each arm of the fan should have the same weight. I was wondering if it might have to do with the way the arms are spaced uneven, which could throw off the balance because one side of the fan has more arms and blades than the other side. But I just ordered an 1818 (too big) which is the exact same fan but with 1/2" long blades and it didn't have any washer on it.
